Description
The Heartbreakers would keep showing up in every club downtown, week after week, opening for people, being opened for, and they played louder than anybody else, and wrote good dumb lyrics and were great.
Then the album showed up, late in 1977. It was an import from the UK, and it never did get released here in America. It sold to everybody in the East Village, but after that I'm not sure. I think people thought they were Tom Petty's Heartbreakers sans Petty.
Right away the band started breaking up, fighting, disappearing, coming back to pay the rent.
It was a slow fade. The great first Johnny Thunders solo album came out, which you need if you don't have it. And that too never had a real follow-up. And he died of drugs and Jerry Nolan did too, and then you couldn't go see them anymore. So we have this one record.
Only, I don't know that you can actually hear this record anymore, unless you get the vinyl original. The album has been remixed several times, and as far as I'm aware those remixes are the only versions that got to streaming.
This is the pressing that came out on October 3, 1977. The matrix is etched with "A Porky Prime Cut" (classic remark) and "Speedy's Hic de Fic" (Speedy is the producer, Speedy Keene, who was the lead singer for Thunderclap Newman about 6 years earlier and had a worldwide hit with "Something in the Air," a possibly ironicly-intended call for violent revolution.
Also this sleeve prints "Born to Lose" under the mispelling "Born Too Loose" which I seem to remember Johnny mentioning from the stage once, "Born too loose--get it? Get it, ya limeys?"
