Land of Echo may be a new project, but its musical masterminds - long-serving UK hip-hop and neo-soul don Rob Mac and sometime Massive Attack and Radiohead collaborator Lucy Wilkins - are both old hands. With the assistance of two distinctive vocalists (Sheffield-based chanteuse Kathy Diamond and London-based Japanese jazz singer Ayana Homma), they've delivered a debut album that blends mutant disco, dub disco, organic soul and dusty jazz-funk rhythms with spacey synths, warming bass guitar, and all manner of heady electronic instrumentation. It's pleasingly hard to accurately pigeonhole, but full to bursting with loose-limbed, lo-fi treats - songs rooted in the dancefloor, but executed with a pleasing sense of space.
