Joined by Top session men from the neighborhood of New York City & offered here in the very scarce mono version. AMG Rates this Title 4.5 out of 5 Stars! _____ If Jimmy Smith was "the Charlie Parker of the organ," Larry Young was its John Coltrane. One of the great innovators of the mid- to late '60s, Young fashioned a distinctive modal approach to the Hammond B-3 at a time when Smith's earthy, blues-drenched soul-jazz style was the instrument's dominant voice. Initially, Young was very much a Smith admirer himself. After playing with various R&B bands in the 1950s and being featured as a sideman with tenor saxman Jimmy Forrest, in 1960 Young was ready to begin what would be a very successful career with PRESTIGE and BLUE NOTE. By 1966, Larry Young was playing music that fell between advanced hard bop/soul-jazz and the avant-garde. For this stimulating Blue Note date, the organist meets up with trumpeter Eddie Gale (who was playing with Cecil Taylor during this era), altoist/flutist James Spaulding, and three obscure but fine sidemen: tenor saxophonist Herbert Morgan and both Wilson Moorman III and Jerry Thomas on drums. Two of the selections, "Of Love and Peace" and "Falaq" are essentially free improvisations that have a momentum and purpose of their own, which move forward coherently. In addition, Young and his group perform adventurous versions of "Pavanne" and "Seven Steps to Heaven."
Very stimulating and intriguing music found here. Next to his 5 Star UNITY session for Blue Note released immediately before this effort, one need look no further to find Larry Young's other best recording. Available on CD as part of Young's Mosaic box set retrospective. And in 2004 Blue Note issued a remastered version as a limited edition CD in its Connoisseur series. To date this brilliant session by Young has yet to be reissued in Mono, or on vinyl.
TO OUR KNOWLEDGE THIS BLUE NOTE TITLE HAS NEVER BEEN REISSUED ON CD IN MONO, MAKING THIS ORIGINAL ISSUE MORE VALUABLE TO THE SERIOUS JAZZ COLLECTOR
