Description

On sale here is a fantastic copy of "LED ZEPPELIN 111", the 1970 third album release from LED ZEPPELIN. An album that surely requires no introduction whatsoever. This is pressed on the plum / orange Atlantic record label, and has the mega early matrix numbers A7 and B5. This might not have the very earliest first pressing matrix numbers, but it has a few pointers that show this is still a very early first pressing. These points I will explain below:-

  • This has the very earliest variation of the E. J. Day Group gate-fold cover, unlike many copies that have the German printed cover. This has the opening at the top and bottom of the front section that has been left unglued in manufacture to allow the wheel to spin.
  • The cover and spine are both marked "deluxe".
  • The rear cover has no writing on as the German type and later issues have.
  • This has the hand etched messages in the run-off grooves "so mote it be" and "do what thou wilt".
  • The stamped mother identifiacation marks are 11 8 (side 1) and 1 2 11 (side 2) indicative of a very early pressing.
  • The cat number is stated on the labels to be 2401-002, but is hand etched in the deadwax as 2401002.

The album is in great condition for saying it is now 40 years old. The deep black sheen is still there. This has been played!! and there are a handful of light marks evident. Please note, these are only superficial marks and are mostly from sleeve removal. The deep groove first cut of this album on high quality and heavy vinyl really withstood a lot of play. This plays with a minimum of fuss and with great power and verve. I think we all know how collectable the plum and orange Atlantic labels are, but let's not forget the power and majesty of this first pressing vinyl. This is missing in all later pressings. This does not play perfectly silently. You try and find a first pressing that does. However, this plays to a high standard with just the odd bit of background here and there in the (hard to find) quiet moments. I believe the winner of this will be very well pleased. This is a really nice copy.

Cover grades a solid EX: (This has no discernable creases. The laminate is still in lovely shape. The spine is in perfect legible condition. The wheel works 100% perfectly. I believe it word be hard to find a significantly better example. I have graded this cover very accurately).

Inner sleeve grades a solid EX-: (Patent numbers, made in England and the "plastic bags can be dangerous" text. Poly-lined. This inner sleeve is date stamped 1070 - this is October 1970. Slightly age discoloured, but no rips, tears or writing of any kind. A very nice genuine example).

Labels and vinyls grade VG+ easily: (This is a visual grading. I grade to Record Collector guidelines. I grade strictly, so what you read is the minimum you can expect to receive. No marks of concern, just light superficial hairline type).

Audio reproduction grades EX: (Both sides play really well. In the quiet parts the odd isolated bit of background can be heard if you are looking (listening) for it. There is the odd soft click or dust pop, but on the whole this a great copy for being 40 years old and still one of the best listening experiences in the world of rock music).

So a cracking album from the true rock icons. Some of their best and most well known tracks are on this. A great addition to any rock collection. In fact a must! The rarest, most valuable and highly collectable of Zeps albums all appear with their plum / orange Atlantic labels.. If you are reading this, you know its approximate value. You know its place in the history of rock. I do not need to fill reams of paper discussing its virtues. Don't miss this chance!
