Led Zeppelin had a fully formed, distinctive sound from the outset and hit the ground running on their eponymous debut.
Taking the heavy, distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme, Zeppelin created a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms.
But the key to the group's attack was subtlety: it wasn't just an onslaught of guitar noise, it was shaded and textured, filled with alternating dynamics and tempos.
As Led Zeppelin proves, the group was capable of such multi-layered music from the start.
Although the extended psychedelic blues of "Dazed and Confused," "You Shook Me," and "I Can't Quit You Baby" often gather the most attention, the remainder of the album is a better indication of what would come later.
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" shifts from folky verses to pummelling choruses; "Good Times Bad Times" and "How Many More Times" have groovy, bluesy shuffles; "Your Time Is Gonna Come" is an anthemic hard rocker; "Black Mountain Side" is pure English folk; and "Communication Breakdown" is a frenzied rocker with punk energy and attack.
Although the album isn't as varied as some of their later efforts, it nevertheless marked a significant turning point in the evolution of hard rock and heavy metal.
Track Listing:
SIDE 1: Good Times Bad Times / Babe I'm Gonna Leave You / You Shook Me / Dazed And Confused
SIDE 2: Your Time Is Gonna Come / Black Mountain Side / Communication Breakdown / I Can't Quit You Baby / How Many More Times
LABELS: The labels are clean and bright with no marks or unwanted writing. There are tightly packed spindle traces but no real central hole wear - EXCELLENT
VINYL Visual: The surfaces display a few marks/scuffs - these are all purely cosmetic and none are feel-able to the touch and they have surprisingly little audio consequence (see detailed audio assessment below) - VERY GOOD
VINYL Audio: The audio quality is absolutely sensational throughout - crystal clear, deep, rich and vibrant - full of restless energy and excitement, and on playback at a very loud volume there are no real audio issues to report - no scratches, no sticks/jumps and barely any clicks/pops (none which are loud or rise above background level and nothing I found at all intrusive) and even the quieter passages play beautifully with no real surface noise to speak of. There is also no discernible groove-wear or distortion present. Overall a great playing copy and the fact that it plays so well (after a lot of use) is a real testament to the sheer quality of these early Atlantic/Polydor pressings - critically graded a very strong EXCELLENT for audio it sounds really stunning
SLEEVE: The original grey stripe fully laminated cover is clean and unmarked with a beautiful deep glossy sheen to its laminated surfaces and very little creasing. The spine ('pinched' at the top and bottom) displays all text clear and bold. There is some wear to the top opening edge where it has slightly split (please see close-up photo) but otherwise, an extremely well preserved example - EXCELLENT
INNER SLEEVE: The original plain white poly-lined inner has no tears or splits, just some creasing and slight age discolouration - EXCELLENT
