'Houses Of The Holy'

GREETED AT the time of release with some degree of sceptiscm concerning its content and musical direction. Don't forget that the band had released 'IV' prior to this which was universally acknowledged as definitive Zep album. 'Houses...' on the other hand was a hugely ambitious work spreading the bands musical wings to new deeper places bathing in light, shade and ambient tones.

This maturity was spearheaded by two key tracks 'No Quarter' and 'The Rain Song'. The former was a triumph of cold emotion and outer body experience anchored to this world by an eerie piano synthesiser and swirling synthesised bass peddles...the mood builds until Bonham finally breaks open the shell with his trademark kick drum blitz.

Trad Zep is more than adequately represented by 'Dancing Days' and the brilliant 'The Ocean' with its stuttered riff and sledgehammer rhythm section. Elsewhere you've got the hippy trippy flare of 'The Rain Song', 'The Song Remains The Same' and 'Over The Hills And Far Away'. Let us not forget the cheeky romp of 'D'yer Maker' and the subsonic funk of 'The Crunge', a tribute of sorts to the gritty urbanesque funk of James Brown.

These days its getting tough to score original first pressings of this one despite the heavy chart action at the time.

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: Atlantic, UK, 1973

Vinyl: Nice clean and shiny condition. No spindle marks and no other signs of use - possibly only played two or three times if at all. Grades as a very nice shop fresh MINT!

Cover: Again, no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated gatefold cover printed by MacNeill Press Ltd - 1st issue matt finish - retains full colour. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is straight, stiff and uncrushed. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 41 years after release. Grades as shop fresh MINT-!
