Led Zeppelin I A1 / B1 Red/Plum Label
This A1/B1 red/plum pressing is commonly known as one of the second press variations following the first 'turquoise' edition. I am pleased to say it plays to a superb standard with very little interference.
This has the corrected 8s on the run out grooves and the Warner Bros/7 Arts/Jewel Music credit on both labels.
The cover is also in excellent condition with minor shelf wear and of course has the grey stripe/band along the bottom edge. The original inner, dated 0370, is also in great order with no splits.

The audio on S1 is Ex+ (Near Mint for the vast majority / Track 4 NM- but Mint- for majority)

Visual grading
This is a lovely looking vinyl! It still retains a very strong glossy sheen and whilst there is some spindle wear there is not an excessive amount. Neither side has any scratches - S1 has only a small number of hairlines and S2 even less! It has been very well preserved down the years and that is reflected in the audio quality. The run out grooves are very clean and only the S1 label has a small white 'mark'.
Play grading
'Good Times Bad Times' plays incredibly well for such an early pressing. The intro is very 'clean' with only a couple of minor static ticks and there is just one light click prior to the first chorus. Apart from that it plays with great clarity and power. It is a very impressive version and the fade out plays with stunning precision giving you a good idea of the clarity on offer here.
The intro on 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' again pays testament to how well the record has been looked after down the years. There is very little static and it's only when the acoustic tempo increases that I heard one light click. The infamous 'baby' cry at 1.43 can easily be heard and it continues to play with stunning audio. The 'louder' sections are so strong without any distortion and in the quieter sections there is only the bare minimum of mega light static, certainly nothing intrusive. The super quiet end section plays beautifully with only a couple of dust ticks. I think an Ex+ grade for the two opening tracks is fair due to the one minor click on each but it is also fair to say the majority play with Near Mint quality.
'You Shook Me' plays with 'high end' audio from the very start. There is no interference on the intro and the clarity thereafter is superb! Aside from one barely audible 'swish' sound that last for a millisecond the playback is phenomenal. The long instrumental section is so close to being perfect - there is no underlying static and there is just one click during the harmonica section. As Plant comes back in there is no 'background' and the 'high octane' section cannot be faulted. Stunning! I will have to grade this as Ex+ but again the vast majority is so much better than that! The bass intro on 'Dazed And Confused' is 'as new' and the same applies to the first vocal section. This is soon followed by one faint click during Page's first 'solo' which otherwise plays to perfection. It is caused by a tiny white 'speck' that refuses to move! From then on the audio is so strong and the quieter instrumental section plays with outstanding clarity - there is just no 'background' to speak of, not even a dust tick, and as the volume increases the audio is of the highest standard. Pure Mint audio in all its glory! Page's solo is absolutely STUNNING with no distortion and you can easily turn it up to full 'blast' level! Honestly the audio is just out of this world!! The remainder is of the same standard and overall, despite the one minor click, this has to be one the most impressive versions of this classic that I have ever heard. Near Mint- has to be deserved but again so much plays to a Mint- standard. What a version!

As any 'collector' knows the organ intro on 'Your Time Is Gonna Come' always has some 'background' and it is just a matter of how much. I am pleased to say there is relatively little here - yes there is some static and a handful of light static ticks but by no means an excessive amount. The clarity is actually very impressive once it quietens down. I think Ex- is fair for this intro. As Bonham joins the scene the playback could not be any better and it continues in the same precise way. There is no interference and to the end it plays with wonderful clarity and definition. Mint- for sure.
The segue into 'Black Mountain Side' is 'as new' and this is how the remainder of this instrumental can be described. There is just no interference whatsoever. This is Mint I can confidently say.
'Communication Breakdown' has no obvious static on the intro and then plays with immense power and depth. So often this track has some static distortion but that is not the case here, the audio cannot be faulted. Every section is so strong and again there is no interference. A stunning Mint- version with yet another super clean fade out.
The vocal intro on 'I Can't Quit You Baby' has no 'background', a couple of dust ticks only, and this quiet opening section continues to impress with no intrusion. The more it progresses the more you are impressed by the level of clarity here. Remember this is a 50 year old record that generally were overplayed and then some! I cannot emphasise enough how well this plays! Aside from one light tick the playback is superb and that is saying something when you consider how many quiet sections there are. I will be cautious and grade this as Near Mint
The iconic bass intro on 'How Many More Times' is so 'clean' with no interference and that is also the case with the first 'high octane' vocal/riff section. It continues to play with outstanding quality and with only a minimal touch of inner groove distortion in a couple of sections and I do mean minimal! The quieter mid section has a small number of dust ticks which you would only 'pick up' if you are actively listening out for them. The clarity is superb and as the music builds there is no let up in quality. The 'Oh Rosie' section is fantastic with no 'background' and the remainder cannot be faulted either. This is an exceptional Near Mint version of this classic, not one click or pop.
In summary this very early red/plum pressing plays to very high standard both sides. Yes there is one light click on each track on S1 but this really is the only obvious interference. There is no underlying static or crackle and the same goes for S2 apart from the intro on the first track of course. The clarity and depth is so impressive and there is also hardly any inner groove distortion - this is clearly a record that has not been overplayed. Any collector would be hugely impressed with the audio quality on offer here.
The Cover
This laminated cover printed by 'MacNeill' has been so well preserved down the years and is in superb condition. The edges and thin pinched are 'as new' and hardly ever seen as 'clean' as this. The corners are in great shape with barely any wear and the opening edge is near perfect also. The front cover has no marking and only a small number of laminate creases near the opening edge and whilst you always find some laminate 'lift' running down the spine it is minimal here and really not that obvious. This front cover really is in lovely condition with no laminate splits and as can be seen it has the silver/grey band along the bottom edge which remains unmarked. The back cover is also incredibly clean with no real wear as such - just one very faint line near the right hand edge and a small number of faint crease lines. Overall though this is a superb version of this cover and is rarely seen as good as this today. An Ex+ grade is deserved in my opinion although I am sure many would grade higher!
Inner Sleeve
The original 'Plastic Bags...' poly-lined inner dated '0370' is in great condition with no side splits or tears and only minor creasing and a little age related fading.
The Labels
They red/plum labels have lost none of their original colour and have no marking or writing on them. There is some spindle wear but this is only centred around the inner ring. Fine examples.
