LED ZEPPELIN II A5 / B4 Atlantic 58818 UK 1969 RED/PLUM Label
This red/plum pressing has the 'Killing Floor' credit on the label not 'The Lemon Song' which is on the earlier pressings although the latter is still listed on the gatefold.

Visual grading
This is a very clean vinyl that has not been played too often as there is not that much spindle wear, a rarity for this LP! There are only a small number of faint hairlines with only three that are slightly more obvious. S1 has a couple of tiny speck marks and one radial type line but they do not have any affect on the audio. There are no scratches to be seen and it still has a lovely glossy sheen despite being 50 next year! This is certainly one of cleanest red/plum pressings I have seen for quite a while and the quality of the audio reflects that.
Play grading
S1 plays with incredible clarity and power. 'Whole Lotta Love' has only very light background static on the intro and then plays with impeccable audio. Rarely have I heard such impressive sound on a red/plum pressing. The instrumental section is immaculate and has no 'background' at all. There is a little static and one soft click on the quiet 'way down inside...' vocal but then plays in superb style for the remainder and even the fade out is nigh on perfect. The quiet intro on 'What is and What Should Never Be' is exceptional and this applies to the remainder. There is a little static here and there but it is very much in the background and does not intrude on what is high quality audio. There are no clicks or pops and no distortion. 'Killing Floor' has a minor amount of static on the intro and displays great power and of course a stunning strong bass sound which is prevalent across the whole album. In fact the long bass section is so clear you forget you are listening to a near 50 year old record! The clarity is stunning and there are no clicks, pops and certainly no crackle just a little static on the end section. 'Thank You' is so often beset with interference and distortion but in the main this version plays very clearly. The first half plays very clearly but I would say the remainder plays with more static and one soft 'tick'. This is more obvious on the fade out/in/out section but it still plays well and better than many I have heard. Again there are no loud clicks or pops at all.
'Heart Breaker' has very light static on the intro and the clarity thereafter is excellent. Minimal background static during the solo guitar section, but nothing intrusive, and what follows is mind-blowing! The depth and power of the audio is 'high end' to say the least and here you can really see why the red/plum pressings are so collectable. They cannot be beaten for depth, sonic quality etc and the majority of this track is Near Mint for certain. Absolutely stunning. 'Livin' Lovin Maid' continues this fine quality with barely any 'background' and easily grades as Near Mint again if not better! No distortion either. From start to finish 'Ramble On' is breathtaking, the quality is of a new high grade vinyl not one of this age! There are a 3/4 soft clicks on the long fade out but it is super impressive in every other way. The depth and precision is of the highest standard, there are not enough adjectives for the stunning audio on offer here! 'Moby Dick' also plays very clearly and with very little interference. The quiet sections have great clarity but there is a touch of background static in the middle and 3/4 light clicks towards the end. Excellent audio nonetheless. The long intro on 'Bring It On Home' again plays with great clarity but with some static sounds once the vocal begins. It isn't intrusive and certainly not loud and it could be said this is why we listen to vinyl, it adds to the atmosphere! Once the guitar 'kicks in' the power is stunning and has none of the distortion that you so often hear. This is a rarity and it is a superb listen. The ending does have a little crackle but overall this track provides a great end to a vinyl displaying wonderful audio in the main.
Gatefold cover
There is the usual rubbing on the edges but it isn't excessive and there are no splits. There is some minor corner wear and the wide spine is in excellent order which remains fully legible. The opening edge has only a little handling wear. The front cover is relatively clean compared to many and has only some faint marking on the left side and one little pen mark. The back cover is very clean with some minor ringwear and a couple of faint marks. The inside of the gatefold is in superb shape and looks practically 'as new'. There are many aspects of this gatefold that remain in excellent condition and like I say it is infinitely cleaner than so many you see.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous' inner sleeve has no splits, tears or marking, just some creasing here and there. It has the patent numbers 800513 & 973939 and 'Made In England' 18/049 printed on one side.
The Labels
They are in superb condition and have no writing or marking and, as stated, not a great deal of spindle wear. The run out grooves are also extremely clean.
