LED ZEPPELIN III A5 / B5 Atlantic 2401022 UK 1970 Red/Plum Label
On offer here is a very impressive first pressing with the 'Peter Grant' credit on the labels which subsequent copies do not have. The publishing credits are 'Warner Bros. Music Ltd'.
The famous Aleister Crowley quotes 'Do what thou wilt' and 'So mote it be' are etched on the dead wax and the rotating wheel still works perfectly. The gatefold is in fabulous condition also. The audio is of a superb standard overall with some interference on one track only.

Visual grading
This is a very clean vinyl and S1 in particular has only a very small number of hairlines and a couple of which are slightly more obvious. S2 does have a very fine scratch on track 3 and two other hairline marks but this vinyl is certainly in excellent condition overall and still retains a healthy glossy sheen. There is not too much spindle wear and there is actually a little vinyl flaking around the spindle hole!
Play grading
The classic 'Immigrant Song' opens S1 with incredible power and depth and such fantastic strong bass. There is no distortion on the top and rarely have I heard this track play with such clarity and precision. It grades as Mint- such is the 'high end' quality, just a couple of static sounds literally at the end. A stunning start.
The super quiet intro on 'Friends' is sublime with no 'background' and then proceeds to play with perfect audio to the end. So often affected by distortion on the top end there is none of that in evidence here and the separation is of the highest standard. Wow what a version!
There is minimal lead in static on 'Celebration Day' and it then plays with such power and again there is no distortion, a rarity as the top end of the vocal often does have tinny distortion sound on the red/plum pressings - not on this one! I would go so far as to say this plays 'as new' the clarity is that good. There is so much 'going on' with this track and yet there is no muddiness to the sound and the sonic quality is breathtaking. The fade out is also superb - a couple of light clicks in the dead wax after but hey there is no music here!
'Since I've Been Loving You' is another high quality listen. With so many quiet passages this clarity is rare to find and especially on a genuine first pressing. They play so cleanly with only a minimal amount of barely audible dust ticks. The guitar solo is so impressive and plays loud and true and without distortion. Immediately there is one dull click sound but there is no other interference. There is a minor amount of distortion on the vocal towards the end but this is commonplace I find on the red/plum pressings and it does not intrude on the quality of the listen. The quiet end section plays to near perfection. Overall a stunning version that has wonderful power and depth.
'Out On The Tiles' ends S1 with great power but as is always the case with this final track there is some distortion on the top end. However, there is no other 'background' and still plays extremely well. The 'loud' instrumental end section plays with great power, it really is a superb listen, and the fade out has no 'background' at all which is a rarity on any final track to a side let alone a red/plum first pressing.

The quiet intro on 'Gallows Pole' has mega impressive clarity and I only heard a couple of very faint 'ticks'. No crackle and almost no static. A stunning opening section. Once the tempo increases this classic then has audio that can only be graded as Mint- the power and sonic quality is again astounding. The rhythm section here is amongst Led Zepps finest, Bonham and Jones working in perfect harmony. There are only a couple of mega light static sounds on the extended fade out.
The super quiet intro on 'Tangerine' plays incredibly well with only a couple of light 'ticks' in the silent section. The clarity is 'high end' and you won't find this intro playing much clearer than this. No static or crackle once more the sound is very impressive. The remainder is of similar quality and I heard only one other faint 'tick'. The warmth and richness of the audio is of a sublime standard and this is not far off a Near Mint grading.
The quiet intro on 'That's The Way' is so clear and has no 'background'. After the minute mark there are some very light clicks, 4 or 5 that are slightly louder. However, the majority of them do not interfere with the music in my opinion. I listen to every nuance of every track and therefore sit very closely to the speakers so I am confident in saying the majority of them would not even be heard by the 'usual' listen. I keep on about clarity and despite this 'background' the clarity is still of a very high quality and there is no static or crackle throughout. A small number of light clicks towards the end but again barely intrusive. The final end section and fade out play beautifully.
'Bron-y-aur Stomp' and 'Hats off to (Roy) Harper' end the album with immaculate quality. These two tracks quite simply play 'as new'. The clarity and strength of the audio could not be improved upon and they provide a stunning finale with 100% perfect sound quality.
In summary this is a very impressive and dynamic first pressing. So much of this album plays 'as new' and the only real 'background' is on 'That's The Way' and even then it isn't particularly intrusive. If it was I would say! The vast majority of this classic album plays with stunning clarity and precision.
The Gatefold
The fully laminated E.J. Day gatefold is in superb condition with a 'wheel' rotates perfectly. The top edges are very clean and the opening above the 'wheel' is indeed near perfect. The bottom edges are also in great order with only a couple of minor rubs. The wide spine looks 'as new' with no wear and obviously remains 100% legible. The corners are also in fantastic condition and only the top left corner on the back cover has a minimal (very minimal!) amount of wear. The opening edge has only a small amount of handling wear. The laminate throughout has no splits, lifting or creasing which is a rarity. The front cover is beautifully clean and the back cover has no marking just a couple of very faint 'fade' areas around the edges. Hardly noticeable really! It is not the discolouration that you so often see on this cover. The inside of the gatefold is in immaculate condition and overall this is a wonderful example of this iconic cover. One of the best I have seen.
Inner sleeve
The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous' inner is very clean but does have a small split on each side and some light creasing and fading around the edges. 0770 is printed on one side which refers to the release date.
The labels
The red/plum labels with the 'Peter Grant' credit are in superb condition with no marks or writing on them. As stated there is not very much spindle wear and what little you can see is centred around the spindle hole only.
