Label/Format: Atlantic – red and red-brown format with matt, smooth surfaces. This an ultimate first pressing on the new Kinney format that placed the ‘Plum’ format in late 1971-72.

Label Condition: Superb examples, very clean, fresh and hugely attractive. Lovely colour and any of the tiny few spindle traces fine and faint – barely any at all on side two at all. This still very early pressing appears hardly even played (more details on this quite unusual copy further down).

Cat Number: K 50002 (the cover an original 2401002 with the new Kinney sticker on the back). When first pressed on the new format, the last remaining original covers were used up, Atlantic applied stickers to them with the new details as can be seen on this large, original one on the cover’s back.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good weight solid weight that matches many originals.

Country of Manufacture: England for both record and cover (Some with original numbers were made in Germany).

Rarity: The album itself is not rare, let’s be honest, this sold in vast numbers like just about all their catalogue. But this one is historically important within the Atlantic catalogue and is considerably harder to find than most. Firstly, few green and red-brown label copies will ever include an original 2401002 with the giant Atlantic K 50002 sticker on the back. These briefly used prior to reprinting the cover with the new Kinney details. Also the record itself: this has the rarer A / B matrixes without stamper codes (e.g. figures following the letters). Both sides retain the original 2401002 matrixes, but only side one has the inscription ‘Do what thou wilt’. ‘So mote it be’ usually seen on side two, is missing – this an unusual variant as both are usually present, if present at all. Slightly later ones had these details taken off altogether. So this inaugural ultimate first Kinney pressing, only made in limited numbers until the transition was totally complete with a matching new cover is unusual in several respects. By now, most fans already owned a Plum copy, these 1972 pressings are seldom seen or offered with these variations, especially with a record barely played. An interesting issue for the specialist Led Zeppelin collector and finding one much better will prove very difficult.

Original Year of Release: 1970. This one from early 1972.

Matrix Nos: K 50002 A (2401002 A7 1 1 [scripted]) / K 50002 B (2401002 B//6 420 1 3 [punched, quite faint but easy to read])

Run-Out Groove Etched Messages: ‘Do what thou wilt’ (on side one). Side two omits ‘So mote it be’. This could indeed be unique to this record, where included at all, they are usually paired-up.

Musicians: Jimmy Page – Robert Plant – John Bonham – John Paul Jones.

Brief Info: Another gem from the same collection as the superb Rolling Stones ‘Let it Bleed’ I am also offering. The owner buying these albums from late 1971 onwards and (on occasion) just missing out on the very first issues. A masterful third release - and sometimes, a little underrated - it’s always overshadowed by I, II and IV. A more varied album with more use of acoustic instruments than previously. A wonderful set with it’s beautiful moving wheel packaging that was designed by ‘Zacron’ (Visual Creations). A graphic artist of the London scene of the 1960s. His logo is seen on the inside bottom right corner area. Again peaking at No. 1 in the UK and US, this band could do little wrong at this time. The earliest Kinney pressings with the A/B (dual matrixes) are arguably rarer than Plum copies, they were not around long and few are offered with an original numbered/stickered cover. This plays beautifully with barely anything unwanted, without doubt, hardly used and looking and sounding magnificent. An unusual copy and strongly recommended.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT: and actually looking better I feel. A gatefold with the moving wheel with die cut windows on front, laminated front, back and inside. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. This is the same UK-made format with the 2401002 catalogue number, it being used for the brand new first editions on the new Kinney K 50002 with the new details seen on the huge back Atlantic manufacturers sticker. These remainders very briefly sed until new covers were reprinted with the new details replacing the old. These ‘transition’ stickered covers with first press green and orange label, dual matrix A/B records inside are scarce and for my money, far harder to find than just about any other version.

Cover Lamination – Front & Back: Even though this cover is fully laminated, if often ages badly. All 11 circle windows are pristine with no burring or damage. The wheel rotates easily and freely too in both directions. The laminate itself retains a fine shine, clarity and freshness and any dulling is light and faint. That is somewhat unusual, especially on the back as these are often badly dulled and yellowed. Adhesion is also a factor, with many seen with long thin crease-lines on areas that failed to stick properly. For the first time in some considerable time, I can offer this cover with no real laminate issues in that respect. All is fully adhered without any of the usual manufacture creases or lines – this makes a huge difference for the more discerning collector. There are some fine surface marks seen under light with a few fine surface creases, again showing little. The recessed wheel area on the front looks as made which no thickening or burring, clearly this function has not been used at all and is one of the neatest yet seen. Lastly, this has minimal traces of any discolouration or yellowing, any gentle traces near the edges register little and this one still really does appear white, rather than cream, off-white or yellow. So a cover that does strong justice to a classic design cover, it can be held and enjoyed with any ageing only very light.

The Atlantic Sticker: Around EXCELLENT: I give this it’s own dedicated paragraph as I feel this is an integral part of this copy. This sticker is large and also quite rare, they were only applied briefly to the original covers now being used up for the new Kinney pressings. This has fairly gently aged with a little toning, mainly around the edges, and has one small left edge split. My hunch, a snap decision to remove it, then though better of and left on. A wise move – these are not seen often – and makes the set complete. Clearly showing the new K 50002 number and new year of issue 1972. Most of the magenta colour text strong with a slight fade to right, all perfectly readable and most strong. I would assume it’s usage mandatory for original covers being used for the new issues, many would have been peeled off (as is easier on laminate) and discarded – as so often I did myself back in the day. These historically important stickers part of the transition process in the Led Zeppelin catalogue.

Cover Gatefold Inner: With normal viewing, this centre spread appears immaculate, only under angled light are some fairly light pressmarks or gentle laminate crinkle seen on the right side near the centre. But only seen if searched for, normal viewing reveals practically nothing. Also this inside lacks the usual discolour and yellowing most seen to have. The main centre fold still retains solid and uncracked laminate – also note, this has the right sided text and UK ‘E. J. Day’ imprint. Many of these were German contracted sleeves with the text then appearing on the left.

Top Edges: Overall, neat and straight, light rubbing seen end-on.

Bottom Edges: Similar with a little thickening on these storage edges. Still adhered well, many of these come totally unstuck over time – the central area of top and bottom always naturally open to allow the wheel to rotate.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front wheel edge is immaculate and totally unworn, laminated and straight. The back entrance edge is mainly very sharp with any thickening or burr traces small, few and light. Again only seen viewed end-on, this wear prone edge is impressive and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced

Spine and Text: A very impressive and wide spine, in fact one of the widest I have seen on this cover. Very solid, straight with no wear bar only traces of surface crinkle on the fully intact, unpeeled laminate. Text is perfect and unworn, also very well centred. This has not sunken into any central recess as many do either.

Corners: All corners are very impressive and neat with no dinks. Any rubbing very slight and excellent or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A deceptively difficult cover often with considerable laminate issues and ageing. This ones full adhesion for me a major plus. A nice looker and still fresh, many collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): the new Kinney records included a plain solid white unlined inner. This one is practically as made and immaculate. Uncreased, barely aged, clean with no edge splits or repairs. Original inners in this superb condition are often great guides to lack of record usage or removal – in this case, especially so.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): very clean with a very fine shine and very solidly pressed. Only under bright angled light are very fine and faint surface marks seen, all totally harmless and most even finer than hairlines. A lovely hardly played record that appears hardly played, it should please most collectors, but not quite the absolute perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer first Kinney A/B pressing plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As stated above, this really excels and to these ears, has all the detail and sonic delivery of the early Plum pressings. NOT all pressings of this record are the same – it is not that easy to explain, but the more discerning audiophile collectors who own high-end equipment will know exactly what I mean. The later, thinner pressings from 1973 onwards lack this special ‘X-Factor’ and were often noisy as well. Any surface sounds here barely even registered, just one ‘tick’ was noted on the whole album. Those stunning acoustic guitars have an in-the-room quality and Plant’s vocals terrific. Few copies will match or outperform this top quality pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. A one-owner-from-new copy and no damaging old heavyweight stylus have been near this clean copy. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, it could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. A more unusual example that is never easily found in it’s own right.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
