I believe that records are for playing, so this record is sold with a full play-grading (using the UK RECORD COLLECTOR GRADING SYSTEM). In many cases a play-grading will be different from the grading that the record would receive for its visual appearance - it doesn’t automatically follow that a record which looks great will sound great or vice versa. Where I provide a play-grading I give only a description of how the record looks, not a visual grading.

UK press red/plum label which sounds great.

This has the following matrix numbers:

2401012 A//3 and 2401012 B//4 and the run-outs are etched with PECKO DUCK and PORKY.

The cover has various signs of wear and age etc, in particular there are repairs to the seams at the rear and wear to the other seams and corners, especially the spine.

The inner sleeve has some creases and various signs of age, wear, handling and use: in particular, it has sellotape residue to all seams (although only two of the seams have actually got splits and these are small - around 2cm and 3cm), and there are tears to the openings which have been neatly repaired from the inside.

Vinyl: The record has retained its original sheen although both sides have several prominent surface marks (almost all superficial), and in bright, direct light both sides show various additional very fine hairlines/sleeve-removal marks. I have played the entire record and the whole thing is very enjoyable and play-grades highly (details below), above its visual grading.

Led Zep IV has a wide variance in recorded sound from very loud to very quiet, and different tracks play-grade at different levels, with the best on this copy being Excellent (Ex) and the worst being around Very Good (VG), so rather than just giving an overall grading I am providing a track-by-track play-grade (with additional comments as necessary):

Black Dog play-grades as VG. Some small clicks, but not bad.

Rock n Roll play-grades close to Ex. Generally sounds superb, just some small clicks, mainly in the intro and fade.

Evermore play-grades around VG+. Some small clicks near the beginning, but soon stop. This track starts off VG and ends up Ex, so I've gone for VG+ overall.

Stairway play-grades close to Ex. Six small clicks just before it gets loud, but sounds great in the loud part with just a bit of fuzziness*.

Misty Mountain Hop play-grades around VG+. Some clicks near the beginning, but not intrusive. This track starts off VG but quickly becomes Ex, so I've gone for VG+ overall.

Four Sticks play-grades as a SAFE Ex.

California play-grades close to Ex. Some small background crackle near the beginning, but nothing bad.

Levee play-grades around Ex. Sounds great, with just a bit of fuzziness* (as found on all red/plum pressings).

*In my experience all red/plum pressings of Led Zep IV play with some degree of distortion, in particular to the final track of each side, especially 'When the Levee Breaks'. Although I do take this into consideration in my play-grading, it is inherent to the pressing and not caused by any external factors, such as stylus wear etc.

So, averaging the above track-by-track grades out, I would play-grade side one around Very Good plus (VG+) and side two as close to Excellent (Ex) with tracks that are above and tracks that are slightly below this overall grading. Note that the visual grading of the record would be lower.
