This is a rare genuine 1st press of Led Zeppelin IV. There are so many distinguishing features of this 1st press, it can be easily identified.
The position of the BAND NAME text on this press is completely different to all other pressings. It also omitted certain credits so had to be replaced by the design seen on the later presses. This press has the A3 / B4 which are impossibly rare AND has the first press labels! The labels on Led Zep IV were changed shortly after release to remove the credit for Peter Grant as Executive Producer and add Superhype to the publishing credits.
Most importantly and the reason for its rarity this 1st label has 'LED ZEPPELIN' printed at the bottom on the plum colour. The 'Under licence' text is printed above the white centre strip, and there is no 'Superhype Music Inc' credit instead it has the distinctive 'Peter Grant' credit at the bottom. It also has Pecko Duck and Porky engraved in the run out.
Also under the track listing on those re-printed labels was the amended correct album credits;
"Kinnet Music Ltd. / Superhype Music Inc." - "Produced By Jimmy Page."
Originally printed on this copy up for sale with the earliest and soon to be changed credit & design label format, stating;
"Kinney Music Ltd." - "LED ZEPPELIN" - "Produced By Jimmy Page." - "Executive Producer Peter Grant."
One other abnormality is also found on the first side's matrix numbers, instead of the correct, "- A - 3", it ended with "- B - 1"! This was spotted as well and where Atlantic determined to get these few records out and sold! That ending was over stamped with 'XX' and the correct ending "- A - 3" was stamped to the immediate right, you can still just about see the incorrect stamping. This matrix is only on the very first records made, most likely even before the later stickered copies.
The record has obviously been played and it shows some wear and surface marks but it plays though it plays like a dream with no jumps or skips, there is minimal background noise between songs and the occasional pop but I haven’t cleaned this and I think if it was done professionally on a VPI it would be greatly improved and could push this record up to EX+
There is a more noticeable mark on the end of Rock and Roll into Evermore this clicks slightly in the gap between the songs and is audible on the start of Evermore until the vocals kick in but it’s only a slight click and its only evident in the quietest of that passage.
The vinyl has great sheen and lustre and the labels have no writing. I grade my items down if anything, I'm sure someone would be happy with this record as is!
This would make a top filler copy until you can afford a mint copy (good luck finding one!) The sound quality on this pressing is amazing!! AND it’s up for grabs for 99p with free UK shipping!
The sleeve and inner have seen some action though and have been taped up pretty shoddily along the spine and back cover, the inner is only good for the bin in all honesty, I could have got a mint sleeve and inner for pretty cheap and tried to oversell this record but that’s not my scene, it’s in original condition as I sell all my records.
If you require more photos or audio please let me know in advance of auction end and I'll see what I can do!
I have 100% positive feedback as a seller so please bid with confidence and if you have any questions please ask, all my auctions start at 99p with NO reserve and where possible FREE SHIPPING!
I have a stack of rare records coming up so check out my other items and be sure to add me to your favourites list!
Thank you for looking and happy bidding!!!
