Description

Physical Graffiti A1/B4/C1/D1

This first pressing of this double vinyl LP is in overall stunning condition with high end audio.  Of course being a genuine first press it has no Warner credit on the labels and instead has Joaneline Music credited.  It also has the Swan Song/484 Kings Road address on the back of the cover.  The lettering on the spine is printed in red again indicating a first press, the later pressings were printed in black.

Many sellers classify the B5 as a first press matrix.  Whilst it is a very early one it is actually a second pressing and only the B4 matrix can be truly considered a genuine first press ie the one I am selling :-)

It is very rare to find a genuine first press with audio of this quality.  Ex+ may even be too conservative as the vast majority of the LP plays as Near Mint in my opinion.  The cover is also in wonderful condition.

Visual grading

The first vinyl quite simply looks like new.  It has a fantastic glossy sheen and no hairlines, scratches or marks at all.  I cannot believe how good it looks!  In fact there is no spindle wear on either vinyl which is incredible.  The second vinyl has only a few tiny hairlines on Side Three, a barely visible miniscule scratch on 'Ten Years Gone' and one tiny very faint hairline across the final two tracks on Side Four but you have to look very closely to notice it!  Other than that it is lovely condition and you won't get many first pressings looking as good as this.

Play grading
Side One plays with stunning audio and only 'Custard Pie' has 5/6 soft clicks at the beginning.  The clarity and depth is of a very high standard and there is no intrusive background noise at all.  There is also complete silence between the tracks with basically no static throughout.  The quiet intro to 'In My Time of Dying' plays with fantastic clarity and no interference and even the quiet end sounds superb.  A little distortion perhaps on the top end but in all honesty the audio here is of Near Mint quality and I have rarely heard better, if at all.
There is no lead in static at all on Side Two and the audio once again plays with supreme quality.  The odd quiet 'dust tick' but nothing intrusive.  All tracks play with immense clarity and 'Kashmir' is a real highlight and without doubt one of the best versions I have ever heard.  The fade out plays with no static/crackle which is just incredible for a vinyl of this age.  The depth and richness of the sound is of breathtaking.  What a listen!
'In The Light' on Side Three begins with some very light crackle but again is very much in the background and does not intrude on the listening.  I did hear just one pop once the vocals begin.  The remainder of the track plays with a stunning quality so rarely found on a first press.  This standard is continued up until 'Ten Years Gone' which does have about ten clicks at the beginning due to a very small scratch which is visible.  Thereafter the track plays with wonderful audio and no further interference.
Accept for a tiny bit of static at the start of Side Four, 'Night Flight' plays with Near Mint audio the quality is that good.  'The Wanton Song' equals it with stunning sound and 'Boogie With Stu' only has one pop at the beginning and then plays perfectly.  The final two tracks play with great clarity and resonance with just a hint of quiet static but is only noticeable in a handful of places, again not intrusive.
In summary this is a stunning first press and the audio quality could not easily be matched.  The lack of real crackle is testament to the quality of the vinyls and apart from the intro to 'Ten Years Gone' there is no intrusive interference.  There are no skips or jumps whatsoever and it is obvious the vinyls have hardly been played due to the lack of spindle wear.  To find this classic LP playing with such quality is a rarity considering it is now over 40 years old.
Cover
This is without doubt one of the best first press covers I have seen in a long time.  You often find them in poor condition due to the pressure of all the inserts inside and just general wear and tear.  This one has been superbly well maintained and the only negative, if you can call it that, is the mild rubbing on the corners.  The corner on the top of the spine has a little more wear than than the others but again is only minimal.  The wide spine itself is in fabulous condition and has no other shelf wear at all.  Another rarity is that all the windows remain perfectly intact.  So often you will find a tear or two but here they remain 100% immaculate.  The top edge is extremely clean and only has minimal handling wear and the thick bottom edge only has minor rubbing over a small area.  The top edge on the back cover does have a very small amount of wear.  Overall this is a stunning cover and it is very rare to find one in this superlative condition and easily grades as Ex+.
Inner sleeves
The record sleeves are in perfect condition with no wear or splits at all, I have never seen better.  The credits sleeve is very near perfect accept for a couple of tiny age related marks.
The labels
They are both in amazing condition with no spindle wear or marking at all.  Mint quality.
