Visual grading
There are some hairlines on both records but most importantly there are no scratches. In fact I would say the first record has a few more hairlines but at 40+ years it is still in excellent condition and the audio is of a superb standard. The second record is in lovely condition with very few hairlines. They both have a healthy glossy sheen and have not been over-played as there is barely any spindle wear. There is one tiny 'heat' bump on S1 but it does not affect the audio quality in any way. The labels and run out grooves are super clean with no markings.
Play grading
'Custard Pie' begins S1 with highly impressive audio. With barely any static on the intro the entire track plays with stunning clarity and precision. There are no clicks or pops and no distortion on the top end either, just minor static on the fade out. A superb start. 'The Rover' does not disappoint and plays without fault although there is perhaps just a hint of minor distortion, definitely not intrusive. There is tremendous depth on this track and the bass is so strong. The classic 'In My Time Of Dying' has only very light static on the intro, no clicks or pops, and once you really 'get into' the track the audio is superb. There is a little static in the quieter sections but it is in the background and doesn't intrude on the listen. Just 3/4 crackle sounds also but overall great depth and power and a fabulous deep bass sound again. The louder sections are quite simply stunning and impress with no distortion at all.
'Houses Of The Holy' on S2 is immaculate from the very first note and grades as Mint- it is fantastic. With such a dynamic range and power it would be mint but for a little static on the fade out! 'Trampled Under Foot' also plays to the same standard and is breathtaking version for certain. The classic opening riff on 'Kashmir' plays perfectly and I am delighted to say so does the remainder. This is one of the most powerful Mint versions of this classic I have ever heard and to think this is a genuine first pressing! The music could not be any more dynamic and whilst I mention it a lot, there is no distortion whatsoever. Every section on this classic is 100% stunning, wow! Whilst you can't forget Page's work the rhythm section here is so strong and of course Bonham was the main instigator behind this track anyway. Even the fade out plays nigh on perfectly!
'In The Light' has a little crackle and a couple of clicks on the long intro but the music is very much to the fore and still plays with impressive clarity. Once the vocal begins the audio is superb with hardly any 'background'. The next 'Eastern' section plays with immaculate quality and it plays like this to the very end. Apart from the intro the majority of this track plays 'as new' the audio is so impressive. 'Bron-Yr-Aur' has just a 3/4 seconds of light static at the start and then plays with perfect precision. 'Down By The Seaside' is another track displaying great quality all the way through. There is next to no static and there are certainly no clicks or pops. Near Mint for sure and perhaps better! The mega quiet intro on 'Ten Years Gone' has barely any 'background' and provides a superb start. This really is stunning version of this classic. So many classics on this album! There are so many quiet sections and yet they all play with the same sublime clarity. The louder sections impress with great power and there is only a little distortion on the final section and some crackle literally at the end of the fade out, although how many sellers mention this?!
'Night Flight' on S4 plays with great clarity from the first cymbal. There is one faint click about 40 seconds in but this is the only interference on the entire track. A superb start to the side. 'The Wanton Song' is another highlight and is almost 'as new' aside from a couple of barely audible static sounds. The sound is so deep and rich here. 'Boogie With Stu' has just the one light click on the intro and then plays with stunning quality for the remainder, no interference whatsoever. 'Black Country Woman' is the same with only minimal static on the 'spoken' intro. 'Sick Again' ends this superb album with real power and definition and again such a deep bass sound. This is wonderful audio to end the album and there is no interference at all.
In summary this classic first pressing plays with wonderful quality throughout with only one intro having a little interference. Aside from that the clarity and depth of the recording is 'high end' indeed. It is getting harder to find a genuine A1/B4/C1/D1 first press in this condition and the audio will not disappoint.
The Cover
The 'first press' cover is in excellent condition with only very minor wear. The corners are often in poor condition but it is only the top left one here that has a little wear. The other corners have very little rubbing/creasing and remain in excellent order. The wide spine is very clean and the red lettering stands proud and is 100% legible. The edges again often have wear but these have hardly any shelf wear, just look at the photos that show the 'Swan Song' address, you can see how clean the top edge is! The 'windows' are also in superb condition and have no splits or tears at all. The front cover has no marking and the back cover only has a small number of faint creases next to the spines. Overall a lovely of example of this iconic gatefold that has stood the test of time extremely well.
Inner sleeves
The outer credits sleeve is in great condition with no marking or creasing and only very minor rubbing on the top edges. The inner sleeves are near perfect apart from a very small amount of wear on the left side of each.
The labels
They are in fantastic shape with no writing/marking and look as new with only a little spindle wear on the S2 label.
