Description

LEE MORGAN - THE SIDEWINDER

A sparingly played and overall great condition copy of this 1964 US original jazz rarity with truly impressive MONO sound quality throughout

Year/Label : 1964 US BLUE NOTE Label number : BLP 4157 Matrix numbers :  BNLP-4157 A, BNLP-4157 B (with "VAN GELDER" stamped and Plastylite "ear" etched onto both run-offs)
Very good plus (VG+) condition vinyl - weighty and completely flat, and displaying a beautiful jet black sheen - in normal daylight both sides of the vinyl come across as unmarked and it is only with close scrutiny under a bright light that I can identify a 1cm and 5cm thin and extremely faint scuff line on side 1 - purely superficial of course and nothing here to impinge upon the wonderful sound quality. To be precise I would grade the condition of side 1 as very good plus and side 2 as "excellent" with virtually no marks at all.  Note the 1st press stamped "VAN GELDER" and the etched Plastylite "ear" on each of the run-off's - indicative of US very 1st pressings.  Excellent (EX) condition labels : not quite perfect because there is a very small area of light colour "smudging" on each label (see photo - quite common on these early 1960's Blue Note pressings) and a few small and extremely fine l spindle trails (you will need to look closely to identify them) on each label adjacent to the centre hole. Clearly this is a record that has been only sparingly played and well looked after.  Note also the 1st press "BLUE NOTE RECORDS INC  NEW YORK USA" text on each label.  Very good plus (VG+) condition original thick cardboard outer sleeve.  Firm edges with barely any scuffing (just the odd tiny and very minor "nick" on the spine and bottom edge - nothing really), nicely defined right angled corners with barely any rubbing on each, impressively rigid spine with all spine text remaining fully intact, no unwanted writing or tears or cardboard creasing, and all reverse side text perfectly intact. The only blemishes are the merest hint of some age discolouration towards the spine on the front side, and some minor and very light storage/handling surface marks on both sides. Take a good look at my photos where I have tried to show a detailed and honest appraisal of the condition of this iconic sleeve - hard to believe that this copy is 62 years of age...it remains impressive, highly presentable and undoubtedly defies it's age!  Truly excellent (EX) mono audio quality with no skips, jumps, repeats, sticks, distortion, interference or clicks and the only background crackle are two quieter small passages (only a few seconds each) on side 1 where just the hint of some extremely light crackle can be heard - nothing really, and ceratinly remedied by a proper clean I am sure. Wonderful tone and clarity -  crystal clear MONO sound quality throughout with each and every track remaining a great listen, and little surprise with these jazz supremos in top form : Lee Morgan (trumpet), Joe Henderson (tenor sax), Barry Harris (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums).  Comes with original and very good plus (VG+) condition Blue Note advertising sleeve with just a little creasing in two of the corners and a 2.5cm seam split in the middle of the left edge. Note that for postage I always insert the vinyl into a new poly-lined white inner sleeve and separate from the outer sleeve in order to protect the originals.    A great copy of this 1964 US 1st press jazz rarity with the wonderful MONO sound quality being a real highlight.
POSTAGE COSTS :
