Jules Levy, cornet

Recorded 1903, before April 23 when the new matrix numbering system began. This was Levy's final year. He died on November 28. No visible matrix numbert. Victor Encyclopedic Discography gives [Pre-matrix C-]2032. I'm not sure what that means. My persoanl DeLuxe copy, "A" plate, gives no number in the dead wax but includes [2] for take 2, I suppose.

There are a few light to very light visible scratches. One sounds five or six times and makes an an occassional tick thereafter.
He self-biloled himself as "The World's Greatest Cornetist" in the heyday of the concert bands, He is among the earliest born instrumentalist to have recorded. His style of playing is much different than that of Herbert Clark, etc.. His virtuoso and legato musical stlyle alike are pure bel-canto. His tone is more full,richer and varied than that of most of his successorsson the cornet with the exception of Louis Armstrong. He is best known throgh his last records when he clearly has difficuly with long phrase-lengths. Even his 1901 discs show his chops in a healthier state. Along with the tenor Tamagno (1850-1905), and Battistini (19856-1928) I consider his recordings a authentic look back at an earlier style.
