REMEMBER LITTLE RICHARD!
TUTTI-FRUTTI/I'M JUST A LONELY GUY (Specialty #561 1st pressing, 1955): CLEAN VG+ 45!
CLEAN VG+ 1st pressing of breakthrough hit for Little Richard (1932-2020); sounds great on your turntable, jukebox...or put it in The Vault!
Tutti-Frutti was Richard Wayne Penniman's bid as the first rock 'n' roll hit (issued at the end of 1955). From opening shout "A-WOP-BOP-A-LOO-BOP-A-WOP-BOMP-BOMP!" (Richard's vocal imitation of a blasting drum intro) to its rollicking rhythm (courtesy of Cosimo Matassa's superb New Orleans studio band, which included Alvin "Red" Tyler, Lee Allen & Earl Palmer), this thundering tune richly deserves Mojo's #1 position on the "Top 100 Records That Changed The World" list. The 45 reached #2 on the R&B chart & #17 on the pop chart in early 1956.
It may have also been the first openly gay hit to make pop's Top 20. Richard's original lyrics left little doubt it wasn't about ice cream: "Tutti-Frutti, good booty; if it don't fit, don't force it. If it's tight, it's all right; if it's greasy, it makes it easy!" Producer "Bumps" Blackwell recognized the song's hit potential but knew it'd get zero airplay unless the lyrics were changed. But later in the song Little Richard sings, "Boy you don't know what you're doin' to me" & that lyric stayed, presumably because "boy" could be considered an exclamation rather than a reference to a male lover.
Regardless of its orientation, this record is one of the first rock 'n' roll hits & a great way to remember one of the most dynamic performers in rock history!
