Description
Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and a book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh. The musical is loosely based on the low-budget 1960 black comedy film The Little Shop of Horrors. Menken's score features early 1960s-style rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown. The musical premiered off-off-Broadway in 1982 before moving to the Orpheum Theatre off-Broadway, where it had a five-year run. It later received numerous productions in the U.S. and abroad, and a subsequent Broadway production.
The production ran for five years. When it closed on November 1, 1987, after 2,209 performances, it was the third-longest running musical and the highest-grossing production in off-Broadway history. Since it was not produced on Broadway, the original production was ineligible for the 1982 Tony Awards. The production did, however, win the 1982–1983 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and the Outer Critics Circle Award.
This original cast recording, released in 1982, omits the songs "Call Back in the Morning" and the reprise of "Somewhere That's Green", and has abridged versions of "Now (It's Just the Gas)", "Mushnik and Son" and "The Meek Shall Inherit". It also shifts the location of the song "Closed for Renovation," appearing in the show after "Somewhere That's Green" while appearing on the cast album after "Now (It's Just the Gas)" to serve as an upbeat bridge from Orin's death to the Act II love ballad, "Suddenly, Seymour". The recording features Leilani Jones, who originated the role of Chiffon at the WPA and replaced Marlene Danielle two weeks after the musical opened off-Broadway.
THIS COPY is a Canadian 1st pressing from 1982 on Geffen Records (see Notes, below).
The vinyl, both visually and per a test listen, is in Excellent [EX] or better condition.
The original cover has a hole punch in the upper right corner viewed from the front. Except for a touch of ring wear at the bottom, the front is in smooth, pleasing condition. The back is almost as good, with only another touch of ring wear, this time at the top. [And personally, I like the little maple leaf in the upper left corner on the back - Go, Canada!] Overall, the cover is in Very Good Plus [VG+] or better condition.
The original inner sleeve (which, or course, also has that hole punch) is made of cardboard rather than paper. It has lyrics and cast photos on both sides, and is in pristine Excellent [EX] condition (hole punch aside :-)
