Description

I might as well cut to the chase and advise you to BUY THIS RECORD NOW!

It's FLETCHER HENDERSON'S ORCHESTRA in 1927, when they were known to insiders as "The New York Yankees of Jazz."  A truly invincible, bullet-proof band, they set the standard for hot playing the same way Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were setting the standard for baseball.

On a well-made (heavy - thick - laminated!) Columbia record, they tackle "P. D. Q. BLUES" and the dixieland standard, "LIVERY STABLE BLUES," done in a most UN-dixieland manner.  Both sides are brashly terrific, modern, art-deco arranging (by Don Redman), with one heavy-hitting hot soloist after another!  This record (and luckily, a few others) captures Fletcher's band at its absolute zenith of achievement.

A catch-your-breath awesome personnel: RUSSELL SMITH, JOE SMITH, TOMMY LADNIER (trumpets), JIMMY HARRISON, BENNY MORTON (trombones), BUSTER BAILEY, DON REDMAN, COLEMAN HAWKINS (reeds) CHARLIE DIXON (banjo) FLETCHER HENDERSON (piano & leader), JUNE COLE (tuba) KAISER MARSHALL (drums).

Whew!

This original 1927 "Viva-Tonal" Columbia 1002-D is in fantastic E to E+ condition. No wear, smooth shiny surfaces. VERY slight lams on one edge. A slight pop here and there.  A near-perfect copy.

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
