Maazel was a child prodigy, making his conducting debut at age 8, as conducting the National High School Orchestra at the World's Fair in 1938, and guest conducting the NBC Orchestra on the radio at age 11. In the 1950 he toured and led the Gershwin  Concert Orchestra with the cooperation of Ira Gershwin. He was the first American to  conduct at the Bayreuth Festival in 1950 and worked with many European orchestras. In 1972c he became music director of the Cleveland Orchestra. He became general  manager and conductor of the Vienna State Opera, ad in 2002 he became musical director  of the New York Philharmonic. Well liked but some times firey, he clashed with the Berlin Philharmonic over his failure to lead the orchestra succeeding Herbert Von Karajan
