Legend has it that Van "The Man" Morrison paid $30.00 for Lorraine Ellison's first single ("Stay with me", included in this album) back in 1968; a money which, at that time 41 years ago, probably could have bought him an Irish (or Scottish) castle (ghost optional), vintage car and a private chauffeur, plus a few groupies. Another legend has it that the studio band broke into spontaneous standing ovation when Lorraine Ellison finished her first, one and only take of this song and Jerry Ragovoy stopped the tape. We find both legends completely compelling and credible. Namely, from the moment Lorraine starts to the moment she ends, the listener is in deep hypnosis. If you have never heard the title song, take our word: it is one of the singularly moving and emotionally powerful - almost overwhelming - moments we have experienced in 35 years of collecting records. If you are emotional, be forewarned; playing this song may push you to the edge, or maybe over it.

Lorraine's voice is the elementary force of nature, unlike ANYTHING you have heard, or are likely to hear again. Compared to her, Aretha Franklin comes across as a weak, girl-schoolish whimper of a voice. Sadly, the album has been unavailable in any way, manner or format since 1969. The album includes tracks later covered by Janis Joplin, Irma Thomas and many others, plus our favorite Lorraine Ellison ballad: the gorgeous "Heart be still", which rightly closes the album on a high, glorious, spiritual note. Track listing: Only your love- Try (just a little bit harder) - I'm gonna cry till my tears run dry - I want to be loved - The hurt came back again - Stay with me - You don't know nothing about love - You're easy on my mind - No matter how it all turns out - A good love- Heart be still. Missing this long-lost and very rare soul album would be an act of utter foolishness

Legendary producer and impresario Bert Berns composed a centerpiece of this album – the closing track: Heart be still – which was based on the old southern Baptist hymn. Fearing backlash from the religious types for daring to profanize the sacred song, Bert Berns had to change some lyrics to placate the southern religious leaders. Clearly, It was a very different time back then…

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging. (nothing significant)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn  (nothing significant)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Back cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity (less than 1 ½ square inch in size).

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
