Label Conditions: A truly breathtaking pair and are near perfect. Any spindle traces minuscule, barely any in fact, and no doubt whatsoever, this stunning record looks hardly played and offers the most wonderful sound you could imagine.

Cat Number: EKS 74001 (Note: the cover has the mono number EKL 4001).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 125 grams. Slightly below average for the era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: initially, and only briefly issued on the gold label format in the US imported cover. This orange label full UK version followed shortly afterwards, and then included a fully laminated British-made sleeve. This copy was bought from new and came with a mono catalogue number EKL cover, that an error by the retailer, but hardly uncommon. This may well be the first stereo copy of this I have had, so I do consider this quite a rare one with most sales in mono. What is for certain, this record will rarely be found in better visual or playing conditions. This looks hardly used and offers truly stunning sound quality. For fans of the psych-rock classics, this is essential and try finding one much better. The cover is very impressive, the record truly outstanding.

Brief Info: The first rock act to be signed to the expanding Elektra label, beating The Doors by a whisker. Led by the brilliantly enigmatic Arthur Lee, this debut must rank as one of the finest within the genre. Skillfully blending rock with psychedelia only one of the greatest albums of all time, Forever Changes issued later in their catalogue was superior to this beautiful set. Like their label-colleagues, The Doors, early Love albums had a real edge and nothing beats hearing this magnificent debut than from a early issued stereo record. It images superbly with a lovely stereo mix and I can honestly state, the sound is little short of pristine. This too being played on a very revealing LP12 turntable. Okay, it has the mono number cover, but it is the UK-made fully laminated version that will blow away the American versions. The record truly could prove the ultimate upgrade for any out there needing to be.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+) and arguably better. Firstly and again, this is the mono EKL 4001 cover and the actual one that was sold with this record. This has only three small references to this – a tiny one under the red large ‘E’ on the front, usual spine number and also, and somewhat hidden (even camouflaged) junder the status on the back (and look hard to even spot it). So hardly any major surprise this was mixed-up when sold by the retailer. A single fully laminated format, made in Great Britain by Polydor Records, London. Includes the orignal plain ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ inner sleeve.

Cover Laminate – Front & Back: Firstly, and obviously, being fully laminated, this for colour and finish blows away the American matt version that in most-all cases, rubs, fades, ring wears and splits so easily. This is more like a super de-luxe version and it looks terrific. Not entirely blemish-free as the front spine edge has moderate lifting. This is NOT wear, simply over time, laminate tightens which can mean lifting, often even present from new – or the cover can badly bow, which this hasn’t. A couple of tiny fine hairline creases on the same edge, with just one tiny crack to the lift, and this being somewhat critical. The laminate is very solid with excellent shine, freshness and clarity, even the lifts, that have only very modest visibility with normal viewing, are solid and fully intact. Barely any creasing worthy of note and just a light and fairly small press mark on the front on the right edge. The back has little to fault and looks superb, as does the front really. More unusally compared to many covers, the laminate only covers the spine edge, it finishes short on the top and bottom edges of both sides as well as the right entrance. So six fine strips of non-protection with very little wear to any. The spine has compressed, hence the text is now visible via front viewing, the cover is very thin anyway, so this is no great surprise. With such superb graphics, this is a cover to hold and appreciate, it has survived the years overall very well indeed.

Top Edge: As stated, only the spine edge is laminate protected, making the others prone to wear. This is very straight and has barely any at all.

Bottom Edge: This is the really vulnerable one being the traditional storage edge. Against the odds, it has very little at all with any rub traces tiny and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and sharp with any wear to the exposed laminate end strips only fine and very light. Any thickening very light and this remains neat and guaranteed untrimmed, the record enters here.

Spine and Text: Solid, but thin and compressed. Just a small rub on the top corner with all text nigh-on perfect under the solid and unpeeled laminate. As stated, the text is now more seen with front face viewing.

Corners: Two have tip rubs, the other two hardly any with very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A lovely looking and rarer UK cover, many of these were issued in the American imported version. Being so little aged and with relatively few blemishes, it should please many, if not most collectors – that is if being a mono one with a stereo record inside is NOT an issue.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined open inner with ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text. The only issue is a crease on the back plus some crinkle, also on the back. The front looks really nice (in a plain sort of way). Both window circles are pristine and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and very close to my full MINT(-) grading. Any surface trace blemishes almost minuscule – this incredible record looks hardly used and barely even run-in in vinyl terms. A superb visual copy that is ultra clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. The odd super-fine hairline or whispy surface trace viewed critically under bright angled light, but trying finding this vintage record much better. Visually a superb record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This historically important record, as it introduced ‘rock’ to the more folk-orientated Elektra label, plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault – a brave statement I know, but I detected nothing worthy of special mention at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Superb stereo separation and mixing, this images superbly and these type of albums I feel always sound better in real stereo. Surface sounds?, well I never heard any, this too being played on a highly revealing turntable and system. No pops or clicks were heard either and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. I can almost state, I will never find this record better and it could be an ultimate upgrade for many. This copy will prove near impossible to find better for looks and sound and is unreservedly recommended. Do NOT lose this one. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
