Label/Format: Elektra – orange and black format with matt finish. The innermost areas have the rough surface, the very outer area, smooth. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in impressive condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few spindle marks on side one, and a few more on two, but still very few a classic record of this age. They are all very fine and faint and only really show under angled light. Massively difficult to find the genuine first issue classics so little used.

Cat Number: EKS 74013.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. A very good solid weight for this record.

Rarity: Rare as a very first UK issue, and the first stereos even more so. Again copies in such lovely condition are always at a real premium.

Brief Info: In the whole history of popular music I can think of few more beautiful albums than ‘Forever Changes’. Prior to this the band had issued a very impressive self-titled debut album (also on offer), a little more patchy second, ‘De Capo’, and then this third, an album of such stunning brilliance, it’s status as a ‘Masterpiece’ is rarely disputed. Beautiful song structures with lush orchestration and meaningful lyrics – a timeless piece of work that refuses to age. Arthur Lee was truly inspired here, and all bar two songs were written by him. It took the music critics by storm, but incredibly, failed to sell well in their native US, but did fairly well here in the UK, even with the nation gripped by ‘Sgt Pepper’. High in my personal list of all-time-greats, I never tire or fail to be moved by the sublime songs and lyrics – this man and band never could live up to this masterwork again and this album alone will mean most music lovers and collectors will know the band ‘Love’. This is one of the most delicate and fragile of records and beyond difficult to find worthy originals to listen to. The main problem being, it was not recorded very loud, hence volume has to be added by turning up your amp. That means any unwanted sounds are emphasised still further. So a clean, hardly played copy is indispensable for the more discerning listener. This has little unwanted and offers lovely sound – without any doubt, this has been played very sparingly, and it appears with considerable care, I have seldom seen or heard a much better example. The cover is superb as well. Such copies are seldom seen or offered – and not one to let go. An indispensable work of genius.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): grading this any less simply would not be doing it full justice and this is a mere whisker off my highest Mint(-) grade. A fully laminated single cover that was printed and made in England by Polydor Records Ltd. This a dedicated stereo number cover.

Lamination – Front & Back: One of the definitive cover fronts of the entire 1960s – as famous as the wonderful record inside and this does it very near maximum justice. The laminate both sides is clear, fresh and shiny with any traces of dulling practically minuscule, even when viewed more critically under angled light. In fact both sides have a mirror-like glossy shine and smoothness that look fantastic with more than a gentle reminder of what these looked like when they first hit the shops. Even though laminated, this cover can and often does yellow and tone, often nicotine the culprit. This has avoid any discolouration with a lovely whiteness retained. Apart from the general lack of creasing – any present are tiny, very few and faint – there is minimal traces of any lifting for which this cover often suffers. I do not even consider this wear, it’s a natural thing that happens as laminate tightens and many even had it from new. But any cover always looks better without it, and here, just a couple of super-fine slivers on the front spine edge that barely even register – there is none on the back at all. No press marks or scuffs and any surface marks are ultra fine and faint, again not even seen with normal full-on viewing. The entrance edge ends are very crisp and clean too with no grime-line formation, not quite flush in the manufacture cut, but that a natural nit-pick issue. On the back top edge, a faint circular manufacture grip mark is seen, again natural and far from unusual. It will take an extraordinary example to better this and simply, it’s one to hold and enjoy. I would think it unlikely to need upgrading for most.

Top Edge: Practically unworn. Minuscule burr traces on back end panel towards the spine corner end – this being ultra critical to say the very least.

Bottom Edge: As above, not dead straight as laminate pulls a little as it tries to contract over time, but both and bottom edges are very neat indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and incredibly sharp with barely any wear at all. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The front end is a fraction proud of the back.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, any compression appears light. Looking very neat, still amazingly white and unaged. All text is perfect and unworn, centred a fraction high (being super-critical again) under the solid and unpeeled laminate, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. The very ends have tiny tip rubs, the fingertip text revealed purely an ultra smooth surface with no scuffs or cracks whatsoever

Corners: A small tip rub on the spine top, any others are tiny with the right pair with practically none. All retain excellent or better shape and look very neat and crisp.

Cover Summary: A very impressive and attractive all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This famous sleeve should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white unlined inner that has aged little. Both window circles crisp and neat with just a tiny nick on one. A little gentle crinkle only with no hard creases at all. All edges unsplit with no repairs, this is still very clean and fresh with a superb sharp top entrance.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any trace marks or blemishes very few, fine and faint – the odd super-fine hairline or gentle friction trace – I for one would be more than delighted if I could find all the 1960s classics looking like this. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy without doubt played very little and then it appears with due care on a quality system. A first pressed UK example of this evergreen masterwork will prove incredibly hard to find better. And be sure, if I not already own an early pressed copy of this myself that plays perfectly, this beautiful copy would even be up for grabs – and even then, the decision to list it was not an easy one.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare record plays up to and for most-all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. I do realise what an incredibly bold statement this is for one of rock’s most delicate recordings, but this will also take some beating. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. However, as stated above, not the loudest engineered record ever made, this not unusual for Elektra at this time. The early Doors albums were quite similar. Hence a clean-pressed and lesser played record becomes even more critical, and few ever make the grade these days. For those familiar with this album, and I guess most rock collectors will be, will know what I mean. A record that needs the volume control turned up higher than average to get this album to really kick-in. Any surface sounds are minimal, few and very faint, even that impossibly quiet beginning plays well, silence is a near impossible ask, but this is very impressive. I have heard some really noisy pressings of this album, it seems hugely intolerant of any harsh treatment at all. Quite a long album for it’s time with boths sides clocking in over 21 minutes, hence the groove widths are finer and more easily damaged. So surviving with few gentle reminders of what you actually listening to – a 46-year-old vinyl record – this too being played on very sensitive equipment. An enjoyable EKS pressing that almost takes you into the recording studio itself. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, one of the most sublime rock records ever issued. To hear that wonderful trumpet towards the album’s end so focused and sharp was a thing of immense beauty and throughout that lovely sound is sharp and unclipped. This present on the most crucial and difficult area of the record where the tracking angle often means distortion and clipping, this can never be taken for granted on any example. This copy will prove very difficult to find better for audio quality and merits strong recommendation. A truly wonderful record and listening experience and so immensely rare from a first press copy.

End Piece: An album of stunning beauty, totally unique and original – few for me compare to ‘Forever Changes’. Immensely daring and inspired, this ticks every box. I will reitterate again, this album plays supremely well and few will get close. If anyone owns or claims to have a ‘perfect’original copy of this album as an original, well cherish it, because most will not play silent. I truly think it’s a near impossible ask. This album has to be played with the volume higher than normal or it will simply be a whisper and the beautiful details lost. I enjoyed this immensely and I think most collectors will too – the odd minor crackle trace or faint tick has to be expected from a delicate album this great age, that is simply being realistic. One of THE albums in the greatest year in music - 1967 - the ‘Summer of Love’ - there can be few better recommendations. Also, please check out my superb ‘Love’ (1st album) in stereo, also on offer.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
