Lowell Fulson - San Francisco Blues
Fontana SFJL-920 United Kingdom 1969
Sleeve : Excellent
Vinyl : Excellent
Lowell Fulson recorded every shade of blues imaginable. Polished urban blues, rustic two-guitar duets with his younger brother Martin, funk-tinged grooves that pierced the mid-'60s charts, even an unwise cover of the Beatles' "Why Don't We Do It in the Road!" Clearly, the veteran guitarist, who was active for more than half-a-century, wasn't afraid to experiment. Perhaps that's why his last couple of discs for Rounder were so vital and satisfying -- and why he remained an innovator for so long.
Fulson established his reputation with a string of fine songs for the Swingtime label in the late '40s and early '50s, where he showed he could belt out hard-hitting blues, do sentimental ballads, double-entendre novelty pieces or irony-filled laments, and also play riveting solos. This '69 vinyl collects 12 early Fulson numbers, all original compositions, and features Fulson leading a group with Lloyd Glenn, King Solomon or Rufus J Russell on piano, Ralph Hamilton, Billy Hadnott or Floyd Montgomery on bass, and Bob Harvey or Asel Carson on drums.
