I bought this LP new in August 1967


Cover - No shrink.  Have had it in oversized plastic sleeve nearly forever.  Very few perimeter nicks or bumps.  Even the white of the cover is still close to new looking.  No splitting, no writing.


Vinyl - Some rubs, some small marks.


Sleeve - Clear plastic.

25mm pressing rings and l in deadwax are characteristic of the Decca Gloversville pressing plant.  


I’ve looked at the Discogs listings for LONDON Records and DECCA Gloversville.  This album, PS 492, is consistently listed as a 1966 release and every one of the 1966’s has these blue LONDON labels.  There are multiple pressing plants and some label typing variations but the releases listed as “unknown” or later than 1966 have different labels.


Wikipedia has this LP released in the UK on July 22, 1966.


So who knows when it was pressed and released in the US.  I’m just suggesting this copy is one of the first batch of US pressings.  With the numerous pressing plants what is the criteria for “First Pressing?”  The pressing ring sizes are the easiest way to distinguish some copies; the Deadwax etchings are not always seen on the Discogs entry pictures.  


Okay.


This album is Eric Clapton after the Yardbirds.  Mayall provided the ideal format to let this kid strut his stuff.  And does he ever.  The opening riffs on “All Your Love” hooked me at first hearing and still echo.  The Otis Rush version is out there and deserves a listen to get Eric’s inspiration.  Mayall also brought John McVie into prominence before he left to start Fleetwood Mac.  

This is not just a relic of early Clapton.  This baby stills packs an extraordinary punch.  Turn it up.  Even the cuts with Mayall’s harp or organ dominating are worth it.
