Released in 1973, this true underground gem is quite an awesome find. Metal was just sprouting back then, and its definitive forces were BLACK SABBATH , DEEP PURPLEThe listCan goOn . Numerous band that tried copying these bandSound appeared and disappeared almost everyDay , and BuffaloFrom Australia wereOneof those bands- but they tookThe new SoundA Whole new direction: They created stoner rock.
Sleep seems like A new HEAVYofTheband , with tracks like Freedom andThe Prophet beingThe best examples. Their riffs are very drug fueled, semi-progressive and have A very distorted SoundA thing that won't be heard until Soundgarden's debut EP- which shows how much thisband what way aheadof itsTime . The rest of TheA major part inThe album, withThe most notableSunrise and Shylock thatCan be called as forerunnersTo Motorhead, and 'Til My Death showing some very fast drumming and very unorthodox solos comparedTo otherHEAVY metal bandsof 1973

The songs themselves aren't too dragging, compared To other stoner rock bands. They have A lot ofSound LikeA more rough James Hetfield and an overallStoned attitude, which could be accepted among hippies andBLUE CHEER fans alike-A thing that wasn't very common andSTILL seems uncommon today. Even The lyrics are weed-infested- they aren't necessarily about doing drugs (like some ofThe modern stoner bands), butSound like they came outofA stoner's mouth:

"Your senses are returning,
You'll be On your way soon
The old bridges burning,
it's your new life's First Day " (Freedom)

if You haven't listened To this yet and YouA fanof stoner rock/metal, or justA fanofHEAVY metal, listenTo it immediately. Very recommended. (raspberrysoda/metal-archives.com)

John Baxter - Guitar
