Sula Bassana’s Electric Moon is back with a yet another release, I say another because I have lost count with the amount of albums available from this band but I believe this is number four, not counting all the CDR live recordings that are also available. If you are already aware of the magic of this Sula and Electric Moon then this might just send you over the edge completely. This is without a doubt the most consistent and over the top piece of work released so far from this band of intergalactic stoner-doom warriors and it is also the heaviest and darkest release so far. 'The Doomsday Machine' is 5 songs stretching out to 80 minutes of mind-bending jams. Three of the five tracks all hover around the 20 minute mark but never once does it get dull as this is hypnotic from start to finish. A perfect album for the vinyl format, this album is available (or was, it may be out of print by now) on a very expensive 2LP set. I know All That Is Heavy was selling it for $60 and I am not quite sure why it is so costly but if you are prepared to fork out that much cash for vinyl then this is a worthy purchase and you will get your money's worth. The limited edition double vinyl LP comes with a poster from the work of German artist Ulli Mahn.

The music on these five track is huge, epic and incredibly trippy and also ideal for cranking loud through a set of high-quality headphones. The songs take your mind on a journey and the thought that has gone into these pieces is remarkable. They are long spacey jams that sound tight, well-composed but still have the feeling of improvisation. The CD or side one in the case of the vinyl starts out with the 20 minute title track, 'Doomsday Machine' that blends space rock, doom, pure-psychedelia, and drone into the one epic piece. Freaky psych guitar blends in with a strange drone-like vocal from Komet Lulu and the 20 minutes keeps on turning, twisting, and evolving so much that it seems like a very quick 20 minutes indeed. This sounds mostly like a "live in the studio" recording with maybe a few overdubs and sounds a bit more off-the-cuff than a couple of the other tracks but the main feature of this track is one of the riffs which is one of the heaviest riffs, Electric Moon have ever come up with. This is a monolithic doomy trip of a tune and a great way to kick off the CD or vinyl.

Track two on the CD and side two on the vinyl starts with 'Kleiner Knaller' which is the albums only short track at five minutes. It is a good track in its own right but it is overshadowed by the following 'Spaceman' which is a monster spaced-out jam. This one is a slow building, atmospheric track that sets up a hell of an infectious groove and features some spectacular fuzzy guitar. Track four and side three on the vinyl is another 20 minute piece titled 'Stardust Service' that begins with one of the heavier passages on the album before settling down into interstellar overdrive doom mode. This is the most immediate track on the album and probably the most assessable for the average listener. The album ends on the 22 minutes of 'Feigenmonolog' which is built around a wall of fuzz, wah, and lots of psychedelic effects. I feel this is the only track on the album that doesn't really grab me all the way through, especially once it reaches the halfway mark but it is still highly listenable piece of psych-doom jam rock.

A couple of elements with this album are worth noting. There is hardly, if any solos on this which is strange considering the band's space-rock tendencies. Electric Moon prefer to weave their magic via riffing and a myriad of guitar effects and sounds but it all works. Also, the atmosphere on this album is mesmerizing, it really captures a stunning but dark vibe while keeping things psychedelic at all times. The playing is of course, incredible but I wouldn't expect anything less from this band. Electric Moon keep on delivering the goods and Nasoni Records should also be applauded for the excellent packaging. Highly recommend you try to hunt down the 2 LP set if you can but even the CD is essential...9.5/10. (doommantia.com)
