The Dramatic Backstory (The Recalls)

In 1982, Epic Records allowed Michael Jackson to record this storybook for MCA Records under strict conditions: it could not be released before Michael’s own landmark album, Thriller, and it could not feature an exclusive single.

MCA slipped up on both fronts. They released the box set a few weeks before Thriller hit shelves, and they distributed promotional copies of the exclusive track "Someone In The Dark" to radio stations. Epic Records immediately slapped MCA with a massive $2 million lawsuit, forcing MCA to withdraw the box set from production and recall copies from store shelves. This legal chaos crippled its initial commercial life, making clean, preserved copies highly desirable today.

Complete Box Set Checklist

To qualify as a truly Complete Near Mint (NM) copy, the box must contain all three of its original elements, completely free of splits, writing, or damage:

1. The Vinyl LP: Features custom, gorgeous full-color movie-still picture labels on both Side A and Side B. It contains Michael's narration mixed with John Williams' sweeping score, anchored by "Someone In The Dark" opening and closing versions.

2. The 24-Page Storybook: A large, 12" x 12" full-color high-gloss script book featuring movie dialogue, imagery, and a famous photo of Michael Jackson standing alongside E.T.

3. The Poster: A massive 22" x 22" full-color folded poster depicting E.T.’s glowing finger touching Michael Jackson’s shoulder. (Many copies are missing this because fans pinned them to their bedroom walls in 1982).
