1971's "The End of My Life" found Sex expanded to a quartet with the addition of sax/woodwind player Pierre "Pedro" Ouellette.  Produced by Joey Gallmi, the album marked a distinctive change in the band's sound.  Largely abandoning the debut's blues-rock direction, this time out tracks like 'Born to Love' and '' found them trying to find a niche somewhere between progressive and jazz-rock genres. I'm probably reading way too much into it, but the set seemed to have been put together as a concept piece - the plotline seemingly having something to do with following a man's love life from birth ('I'm Starting My Life Today') through STD-related death ('Syphilissia' - remember this was recorded in a pre-AIDS age).   Hard to accurately describe, but imagine a bunch of sex addicted French Canadian musicians who suddenly decided they wanted to join the Canterbury progressive movement ...  The results were actually better than that description would have you believe.

- A moody, mid-tempo number, 'Born to Love' was a perfect example of the band's revamped musical direction.  As lead singer Trèpanier remained an acquired taste, though his accented vocals didn't bother me nearly as much this time out  (love the way the lyric 'sex machine' came out sounding like 'six machine').  The song was actually pretty good, except for newcomer Ouellette's needless sax noodlings.   rating: *** stars
- Showcasing Rousseau's tasty lead guitar, 'I'm Starting My Life Today' came the closest to replicating their original blues-rock sound.  Built on a nice a nice combination of  Rousseau's snarling guitar and a Trèpanier bass pattern that provided an irresistible hook, the song also benefited from the fact there weren't any sax, or woodwind solos on it.  In fact my only complaint on this one were the falsetto harmony vocals that kicked in towards the end of the song.   rating: **** stars
- Credited to all four members, 'Emotions' found Sex apparently trying to channel a mix of Jimi Hendrix (with a distinctive French Canadian accent), supper club blues, and some Canterbury fusion band.  Unfortunately Rousseau's heavy French accent and the weird mix of styles didn't make for a great combination.  The fact the song dragged on for over twelve minutes complete with nightclub sound effects and lots of sax didn't help any ...   rating: ** stars
- 'Pleasure' started side two out with a UK-inspired progressive piece.  Mildly entertaining, it wouldn't have sounded totally out of place on a Soft Machine album.   rating: ** stars
- While still firmly entrenched the progressive genre, 'See' at least exhibited a recognizable melody, some pretty group harmonies, and Rousseau's always tasty guitar.   It would have been even better had they dropped Ouellette's sax from the mix.   rating: *** stars
- With a strange mid-Eastern vibe and an exceedingly disturbing lyric (again, remember this was recorded in the pre-AIDS world), 'Syphilissia' was easily the album's most engaging track - not the best performance, rather the most thought provoking effort.   rating: *** stars  
- Clocking in at over thirteen minutes, kicked along by one of Trèpanier's best vocals, 'The End of My Life' was a pretty but brooding ballad.   The song was strong enough that you could even overlook Ouellette's flute solos.   rating: *** stars     (RDTEN1/rateyourmusic.com)
