As part of their Pictures tour which celebrated the 40th anniversary of their first hit Pictures of Matchstick Men, Status Quo appeared at the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival.
This was the band’s second appearance at the festival, whose original remit when it was inaugurated in 1967, was extended in the seventies to include other genres of music.
Five years on from that first appearance, Quo delivered a blistering set, which has already been released on DVD.
This album contains 71 minutes of live Quo, and as we all know, Quo live is where they are the most potent.
With all the between song chat removed, here are 17 examples of why Status Quo still draw the crowds over 40 years from when they started.
Opening with the obligatory Caroline, Rossi, Parfitt, Bown, Edwards and Letley take us on a guided tour of the career of a band which has a catalogue of 75 hit singles to pick from, as well as album tracks.
There’s the newer stuff like Beginning of the End (well, it was new in 2009) and The Oriental, and songs from the early seventies when they were beginning to get the legendary Quo Army fan base; like Softer Ride, Mean Girl and Is There a Better Way.
The very early hits also make an appearance with Pictures of Matchstick Men and Ice in the Sun.
Quiet and melodic aren’t words that one usually links with Quo, but they do have their softer side as evidenced with Living on an Island.
This greatest hits live outing all builds to the final four tracks all of which have become Quo anthems.
Roll Over Lay Down, Down Down (their only UK chart-topper), Whatever You Want and of course Rockin’ All Over the World are given their customary full-on, no-nonsense treatment.
