ON TRUMPET

141

Bull Dog Blues and Rosalee

Recorded in 1951. born 5 December 1910, Fannin, Mississippi, USA, died 18 November 1973, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Luther learned guitar from older brother Willie and cousin Donnee Howard and, like them, played at fish fries and country picnics. One picnic, held at a plantation in Belzoni, lasted 13 days. Luther bought a mandolin in 1936 and taught himself to play. He was drafted into the army in 1942 and saw service in England, France and Belgium. While still in Belgium Luther recorded two acetates, both now lost. In 1947, he moved to Detroit and started what would be a large family of 12 children

Record Condition: V+ with a few marks but plays fine.  See grading details opposite.

Standard gradings
  • E+  Plays like new, with very few signs of handling, such as tiny scuffs from being slipped in and out of jackets.

E    Still very shiny, near new looking, with no visible signs of wear, but a few inaudible scuffs and scratches.

E-  Still shiny but without the lustre of a new record, few light scratches.

V+  A goof condition record in which scuffs and general use might be noticeable but wear is moderate and surface noise not overly pronounced. May be some light clicks

V to V+  An average condition 78 in which scuffs and general use has dulled the finish somewhat. Wear is moderate and playing is generally free from distortion, however there might be some light clicks which are not overly pronounced.

V  Moderate, even wear throughout, but still very playable. Surface noise and scratches audible but not intrusive.

V-  Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy greying in loud passages. Music remains loud in most passages. Surface noise and scratches well below music level.

G+. Grey throughout but still serviceable. Music begins to sound muffled. Heavy scratches.

G  Quite seriously worn and scratched, but music level is still higher than surface noise.

G-  Music still prominent, but wear and scratch damage extensive.

F  Most of music remains audible over surface noise, but listening now uncomfortable.
