Description

The La's' self-titled debut is one of the great what-if records of British pop — a perfect, jangly masterpiece that delivered "There She Goes" to the world and then... nothing. Lee Mavers's obsessive perfectionism and the band's turbulent recording history resulted in an album he famously disowned, but the music itself is beyond reproach — twelve songs of crystalline pop songwriting that sound as fresh and immediate today as they did in 1990.

"There She Goes" is one of the most beautiful pop songs ever written — a cascading guitar riff and a melody so pure it feels like it's always existed. "Timeless Melody" lives up to its name with a chorus of effortless grace, "Son of a Gun" jangles with Byrds-influenced perfection, and "Doledrum" delivers working-class Liverpool poetry over a breezy acoustic strum. The La's only made one album, but it's one of the finest guitar-pop records ever committed to vinyl.
