A superb very early copy with A3 B3 matrices and the sought after Peter Grant credits which were only present on the first two variants of the red and plum labelled initial pressings. The first variant, differing only due to an upside down feather symbol on side 2, is very difficult to find (cheapest on discogs now well into 4 figures) so this second variant is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a super early version of a record that is getting more and more elusive. With the condition of the vinyl here, this may suit someone with a top sleeve who is looking for a vinyl upgrade.

Sleeve: A VG outer sleeve not quite doing justice to the beautiful vinyl. Some rubbing on the spine and edges, particularly the top where there is a split. Some sticker residue top right and a small closed tear on the back of the opening. Retains a reasonably vibrant appearance.

Inner: Original inner, earliest version with four lines of text on the credits instead of five. Split along the bottom which in the past has been taped. Darkening remains but tape has gone. VG

Vinyl: A lovely copy which has been very well cared for and only lightly played. I could hear a light ticking during the silence between Black Dog and Rock ‘n’ Roll and light static at the beginning of Stairway. Really nothing intrusive at all but means Side 1 grades VG+ and close to Excellent. Side 2 seems to have been played less (often the case with this record) and plays beautifully throughout. Excellent audio. Both labels are the earlier slightly more Matt effect synonymous with the Peter Grant credit labels and are bright clean and lovely to look at. Very few spindle trails, and all close to the hole, and a complete absence of previous owner markings. Smashing copy which wouldn’t disappoint if you were expecting an Excellent copy, but that I will grade a very strong VG+ due to the minor issues on side 1. The surface is clean with only light marks here and there and retaining a super glossy sheen.

• We play test some records fully and all records partially (due to time constraints) and focus on any areas where there are marks or wear on the surface, noting where these present a deterioration in the audio.

• We don't currently have a high spec player (We use a vintage 70's Sansui SR-212 with a new stylus) and don't use Mint as a grading.

We appreciate that while the condition of the sleeves can be clearly seen on the photos, it is often difficult to pick up any marks on the playing surface or labels. Therefore, here is a general grading guide as to what to expect from our vinyl:

NM (Near Mint): appears barely played. There will be no visible spindle trails on the labels.

EX (Excellent): a really solid copy with no visible marks except light lines under bright light. Plays well with no lessening of sound quality on our player. May be a handful of spindle trails but no evidence of anything other than light previous use.

VG+ (Very Good Plus): May have one or two visible marks but still plays with strong audio, maybe some non invasive static/crackle in places but no repeating clicks. May have more spindle trails around the central hole hinting at fairly regular previous play.

VG (Very Good): The record will have some deterioration to the audio which may impact the listening enjoyment in some but not all areas. Maybe caused by light scratches or scuffs, these will be visible without the aid of bright light. There will be no jumps or loops. A larger number of spindle trails may be in evidence around the central aperture.
