Atlantic 1973
A superb first pressing of the band’s fifth album. Included in lieu of the OBI band, is an advert for ‘Led Zeppelin 5’. A fascinating piece of history to accompany this iconic album. This of course was their fifth album with the first 3 albums simply being numbered and the fourth having no title at all. The music press at the time, eager to promote the forthcoming album, chose to call it the obvious: Led Zeppelin 5.
The advert interestingly gives a release date of January for the album which was the intended original date. This was put back to March 1973, and the album was famously released while Led Zeppelin were on tour where many of the songs were already part of the set.
Jimmy Page was keen to continue the enigma surrounding the fourth album by having no wording at all on the gatefold sleeve. The record company were not happy and Peter Grant allowed an OBI band to be added to the release in some countries with the band name. As it turned out, this was the first Led Zeppelin album to have a non eponymous title.
The vinyl here is in Excellent order. Despite a few light marks, it plays beautifully with just a few ticks audible during the intro to Dancing Days. This has the very first A2 B2 matrix codes with RL etched alongside denoting this as the Robert Ludwig pressing known for the clarity and brilliance of its audio.
The inner sleeve is near to Excellent, really not much handling or storage wear at all and no splits - a lovely first issue inner.
The sleeve is also a sound near to Excellent copy. A small stain by the top of the spine on the rear aside, there is very little in the way of handling or storage wear. A very sound example.
Overall a great first pressing.
