1969 Zeppelin flows almost entirely on tour, with nearly 150 shows. In the very brief breaks, the group finds time to record his second work, simply called II. The result is a sound more psychedelic and less "hard" than the debut, with an air almost live in the studio. To open the disc, a short laugh and a simple riff of only three notes. Will be precisely those three notes to bring the Led Zeppelin legend. The song is "Whole Lotta Love", set to become one of the hymns quintessential rock. Supported almost entirely from that riff, it evolves in the central part in a bacchanal rumoristico, including stormy percussion, explosive guitar distortion and visceral screams and instinctive Plant. The main difference between this album and the previous one is his compositional freshness: you feel that was composed "on the road", and many instrumental parts left to improvisation prove it. Not lacking overt scopiazzature: the opener is taken from "You Need Love" by Willie Dixon (1962), and the third song "The Lemon Song", slow and heavy blues, but by sudden surges hard, from "Killing Floor" of Chester Burnett aka Howlin 'Wolf. The text still has misogynistic tendencies, citing a famous Robert Johnson sexual metaphor: "Squeeze my lemon / until the juice down my legs / If you blink my lemon / will not I will drive down to kick out of bed." This text is opposed to "Thank You", ballad with organ in evidence, where Plant, the first text written for the group, pays homage to his wife. The first side is completed by the acoustic delicacy of "What Is And What Should Never Be", which also emerge jazz trends. Side B opens with another masterpiece, "Heartbreaker", bignami each subsequent guitarist, with central to solo without accompaniment, which experiences one of the first tapping of history. Flying on the pleasant and aggressive "Living Loving Maid (She's Just a Woman)", the last three of the album are the pearls arrembanti "Ramble On" and "Bring It On Home": the first semi-folk, poised between languor hearing shots and hard-rock and bluesy (with the second, and, between these two, the instrumental "Moby Dick", containing one of the most famous solos battery of history so much by Plant played a mouth harmonica), like " the Mule "by Deep Purple and" Rat Salad "by Black Sabbath.
Success, of course, will be great. II scalzerà from the top of the chart "Abbey Road" by the Beatles: remain on the Billboard charts for 138 weeks and # 1 for a month and a half, selling, in just six months, three million copies. unpleasant unique "hangover", disputes for plagiarism with Dixon publishers and Burnett, who will be resolved through mediation by the legal tiring of the band. But this unscrupulous practices relating to "embezzlement", which is rather in vogue at the time, not alienate the firm Page & Plant of the public and critics.
