Matrix / Runout

Side A: ST-A-691671-40037-A … LW W AT RL
Side B: WEA ST.A.691672-M XX … LW AT W

A particularly interesting continental European pressing of Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II, issued by Atlantic under catalogue number ATL 40 037.

The major feature of this copy is the “RL” inscription in the Side A runout, identifying Side A as a Robert Ludwig cut. Ludwig’s mastering of Led Zeppelin II has become highly sought after by collectors for its powerful and dynamic sound.

Importantly, this copy is not being represented as the famous US double-RL pressing. The Ludwig initials appear on Side A only, while Side B uses a different Atlantic/WEA cut.

The record has the familiar green/orange Atlantic labels, with SABAM visible on the labels, while the package also retains a period German-language WEA catalogue inner sleeve. Closely related ATL 40 037 continental issues are documented using the same Side A Ludwig metalwork, including the characteristic ST-A-691671 … LW W AT RLinscriptions.

Because ATL 40 037 copies circulated in several closely related continental European configurations, I would describe this conservatively as a European / Belgian-market reissue rather than assign an unsupported exact release year.

Originally released in 1969, Led Zeppelin II contains some of the band's defining recordings, including Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, Ramble On, The Lemon Song and Bring It On Home.

Condition

Sleeve: VG+

The original gatefold sleeve remains in very good collector condition.

There is light edge, corner and surface wear consistent with age, but the sleeve remains structurally sound and presents well overall.

A small old price sticker marked “200” remains at the upper-left corner of the front sleeve, as clearly shown in the photographs.

The internal gatefold remains presentable and intact.

Graded VG+.

Period WEA Inner Sleeve

A period WEA International catalogue inner sleeve is included.

The inner advertises contemporary Atlantic, WEA, Elektra and Asylum releases and carries German-language copyright text.

It shows age-related handling and storage wear but is retained with the record as part of the existing package.

Vinyl: EX

The vinyl is in excellent condition with a strong glossy finish and only minimal evidence of previous handling or play.

Any visible marks are extremely light and superficial, comfortably deserving the EX grade.

Most importantly, the Side A runout clearly carries the desirable RL initials together with the Atlantic mastering marks.

Graded EX.

Please study all photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition assessment.
