Description

Led Zeppelin –  Led Zeppelin III

Atlantic, ATS ST 06081

Italy, 1970

1st press, still with the rare and unique provisional cover (see below) and the subsequent "black holes" cover.
The story: Zep III has been released in Italy on Sep 14, 1970.  Atlantic did the job quickly to meet the huge demand from the fans and when the records had been pressed they did not have the cover printed yet.
So they did a small run printed on common cardboard, single sleeve with a different image and a few issues. The cover was "provisional" because the fans had to go back to the store to replace this one with the "real" one printed on thick cardboard (the usual design with or without rotating wheel).
So, this is not too easy to find because most of the fans went back to the store to get the definitive cover, most of them threw in the bin the provisional and also being the provisional printed on thin cardboard it didn't last long (as you see from the pictures, it's easy to tear and wear it). So there are just a few for sale and usually in very bad condition.
The text on the provisional cover is this one:
"Edizione Straordinaria Led Zeppelin III Busta Provvisoria" (i.e. extraordinary edition, Led Zeppelin III with provisional cover")
"Questa busta realizzata per soddisfare LE PRESSANTI RICHESTE di questo attesissimo nuovo disco potrà essere sostituita presso i rivenditori con la busta definitiva in corso di preparazione" (i.e. "this cover has been printed to meet the massive demand for the new album and can be replaced at your record store with the definitive cover that is being prepared")
The provisional sleeve was printed so quickly that no one noticed the error of the word "RICHESTE" instead of "RICHIESTE" There's also another release that has an additional printing mistake: the Atlantic logo on bottom left is mirrored

The 1st Italian pressings sported the beautiful red/black Atlantic label before being replaced by the usual orange/white/green.
