Description
1st released in November 1971 - So, this classic title is now celebrating it's 50th Year anniversary.
An original very 1st press of Zep IV on the UK Atlantic label. Matrix A3/B3 - very 1st cut available. This label version/variation is one of the earliest iterations - you can only find one earlier version with the feather error [that's all]. Note the track 'Mountain Hop' exhibits as 'Hop' - this is the correct original layout and would be messed up many times on later copies. What marks this copy out as very early is the fact that the band name appears in the southern sector [plum] and Peter Grants name is still apparent. This exists only on the earliest label version at 1st pressing. The vinyl comes housed in an original cover with left panel glued shut. There's also an original 4 credit inner with exposed flipbacks. So, we're 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex-) In lovely condition and it's difficult to find early copies which have only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a few light marks per side [mostly insignificant]. One mark on side 2 is semi-feelable - thankfully it doesn't cause major problem [see details below]. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with a couple of minor deviations. The red and plum copies sound great - period...and this badboy is no slouch. Upbeat numbers are delivered with energy and bags of low-level detail. But lets get critical for a moment and go straight to those THREE very tricky and popular acoustic tracks. STAIRWAY/EVERMORE/CALIFORNIA. Each of these tracks, for differing reasons, are terribly difficult to find playing clean. With a quiet back ground on the acoustic numbers - man, you are close to nirvana. All three play nice and clean - much cleaner that you typically find. You might be able to pick out just a touch of very faint 'presence' occasionally, but it is very minor and fleeting. This is quite unusual to manage this level of delivery - consistently. The only issues are.... A mark in 'Misty Mountain'. Thankfully, the vinyl is deep grooved and this track is high volume. All I can make out [after concentrating carefully] is a couple of minor isolated ticks twice early on - nothing unpalatable at all. Given the overall standard of delivery on this LP - an extremely small price to pay, There's also a couple of minor ticks in 'California' - but this is by far the fussiest track on the whole album. And this copy delivers it practically perfectly clean[!]. Overall a terrific little player and the genuine 1st. The audio is worth every penny. Love it!
Cover (Ex-) Has clearly been cared for with nice smooth and flat front and rear. Little sign of ageing or surface wear - just one tiny nick down at the foot of the rear. The interior looks great - no issues. Some edge wear in places, but not bad at all. The spine looks well above average - no issue at all. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inner (Vg-) Edges were split. I have tape repaired so it is all solid and useable. Surfaces are actually quite good.
