Description
An original January 1972 copy on Atlantic Orange & Green label. Want a great playing early Zep4 - but not keen on the prices? - then read on. This early copy comes hot on the heels of those final red & plum copies that are so highly prized. Time frame wise you could could be talking as little as one week! So bang for buck this is probably the best copy you can bag. Great audio & Great price. How do we know that it's a mere three months from those original masters? Well, this is the earliest design possible for an orange and green label. The text is all in the bottom half and there's no Warners logo. But the real clincher is that, in the deadwax, this copy still has the original red & plum catalogue information - both sides! Catalogue number "2401012". Also worth noting that the very earliest copies of ZepIV carry the A3/B3 matrix [Oct71]. But here's the remarkable thing - so does this copy! The audio will be an identical cut as found on the very 1st copies you find for ZepIV. But will a true 1st from Oct71 play nice and clean like this copy? The vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover [thickcard] version [much more solid than many examples from this period]. Also included is an original lyric inner sleeve from the time. But most likely not the original one for 1972 - they should be Grey in colour.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) In lovely condition and has only seen light use. Under close inspection I can only make out a couple of very light marks per side - nothing remotely troublesome. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with one very slight deviation. Intros and inbetweens are really nice and quiet and the audio comes across with superb clarity. This LP can quite straight forwardly reveal the full glory of Zep IV. It is one of the cleanest A3/B3 cuts I've ever witnessed. As you head into those low-key acoustic tracks and you're hearing it play clean - you know you're onto something. Evermore plays clean - hardly any background at all [unusual]. Stairway plays clean too - even in that ultra-fussy intro [very unusual]. California is probably the fussiest of all the acoustic tracks.. and you know what.. it plays superb! A couple of minor crackles occasionally - way better than what you usually tend to find. The only vaguely noticeable background I could pick out [throughout the entire LP] was momentarily midway through 'Black Dog' - in that temporary lull. Believe me when I say this is minor and I'm just picking it up to be ultra-critical. Overall a blindingly good rendition of this Zep classic - comes highly recommended. Don't think you'll find an early A3/B3 cut playing to this standard any time soon. And most certainly not at this price level.
Cover (Vg+) Very nice looking cover with a relatively clean and uncreased front. The rear exhibits a touch of light agieng in places and a bit of wear in the top sector. The interior looks excellent - no issues at all. There's a bit of edge wear in places, but no wear-through anywhere. The openings are still in nice solid unworn condition. The spine exhibits a bit of wear and some light fade - but nothing too bad. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity in part thanks to that solid card construction.
Inner (Ex-) Given that it's the later white version it's looking very nice. Just light handling and, seemingly, no splits.
