Description
An original 1st press of Zep IV on the UK Atlantic label from 1971. Matrix A3/B3 - very 1st cut. Ok, and here's where it gets interesting.... the very 1st Zep IV labels went out the door with a number of attributes that were discontinued very quickly at 1st release. I'll list them..true 1st press copies should mention 'Peter Grant' at the foot of the label along side Jimmy Page. Publishing credits are only mentioned as 'Kinney' - just a week later they would include 'Superhype'. Then there's the positioning of 'Led Zeppelin' - nearly all original copies have this positioned in the red sector, whereas the very initial first design it shows within the plum sector. "BOTH FEATHERS ARE POSITIONED CORRECTLY". The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover. Also included is an original grey textured inner sleeve with exposed flipbacks. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) A very well preserved very 1st copy which has only seen light use. Under close inspection I could only make out a couple of light marks per side, and one slightly longer trail..it sounds momentarily [as detailed below]. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with one deviation. Intros and inbetweens are really nice and quiet and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. One of the best renditions of Zep IV I've witnessed. Even through the low-key super popular tracks on side 1. Even in Stairway which is acoustic and often played to death...I'm hearing a very nice and quiet background. This really is quite unusual on any red & plum copy let alone on the 1st label. I will do my usual catch-all....expect a few crackles in a couple of isolated spots per side [e.g. final moments of Levee]. The only deviation is a few clicks in the intro to "Evermore". They are relatively minor and start to fade out as the vocal kicks in. Given that's the only issue, and the rest of the LP is of such a high standard, I'd argue that most folk should be able to live with it. It's certainly a top-draw rendition and one you'd really struggle to even equal.
Cover (Ex-) What I like about this cover is that the surface looks clean and feels clean. There's very little sign of surface wear that you often find on these early copies. Please note there's a tiny name written in the top left corner of the framed image. The rear looks great too with no creasing or surface wear. The interior looks great with no issues. Edge wear is very light for this title. I'm used to finding it on most edges to quite a degree with this title. But someone's really looked after this copy there's only a tiny amount in one or two isolated spots. The spine is pretty much totally intact with a touch of lightest wear. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity and remains a very fine specimen indeed.
Inner (Vg) The surfaces look fine, but the edges have been taped up and, at the opening, there's a chunk torn away.
