Description
Finally, I'm back to listing more JAZZ Records! This week we have some of the great 10" records from the early to mid 1950s and -if I can get to it (hoping!) some very cool 7" EPs.
More to come!!
Lennie Niehaus
THE OCTET
Contemporary Records C-2517 <> Mono <> Original 1954 U.S.A. Pressing <> 10" LP
COVER: VG++ ~Extremely clean front and back. Light wear to seams. No splits. All corners sharp.VINYL: VG++ ~High gloss vinyl plays exceptionally clean and clear with no background noise. Very occasional soft tic; NO pops or skips. Bright, direct light reveals a few light surface marks. Deep groove labels are clean and bright with no wear or spindle marks.
STRICT, CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE Ratings!
(See PHOTOs)
The Octet Features Niehaus with Bob Gordon, Jack Montrose, Stu Williamson, Bob Enevoldson, Monty Budwig, Lou Levy and Shelly Manne. (the "Volume 2" attached as sub-title refers to the fact that Lennie's earlier record of the same year; his first ever date as a leader; was The Quintet: "Volume1")
A delicious set of tunes, brilliantly arranged with inspiration and style. For all the high-brow declarations of "contrapuntal...chordal...parallelism...polytonality...experiments", etc. and "sequential keys...linear... vertically...complex harmony parts" as well as references to "modern" classical composers Schoenberg and Bartok (!) in the Liner Notes; this is music with sumptuous swing, panache and a serious groove; certainly more from the soul than the head. While Niehaus mastered all the former techniques and "idioms", he didn't ever let it get in the way of the latter. Not here anyway. This is a swinging set.
