Description

Up for sale is a very scarce single (7 inch, 45 RPM, vinyl record) containing two great rhythm and blues songs.  As will be discussed, this record has a very unusual release history.  The copy I am selling is the original, issued before all of its information was changed for marketing purposes: to capitalize on the emerging stardom of Texas bluesman Albert Collins!

Artist:   Leo Davison and The Collinairs

Record Label:  The Great Scott Recording Company

Record Number:  0008

"A" Side (GS-3):  Hello Mae (L. Davison) [Crazy Cajun Music, BMI; Time:  2:19]

Wax matrix marks:  "GS-3" (Etched) and "Sheldon" (stamped)

"B" Side (GS-4):  It's Never Too Late (L. Davison) [Crazy Cajun Music, BMI; Time:  2:45]

Wax matrix marks:  "GS-4" (Etched) and "Sheldon" (stamped)

The following information is based on a July 21, 2019 post by Gerd Miller on the German website of "rocknroll-schallplatten-forum".  (The post is in German, but my search browser provided a translation hyperlink.)  According to this site, the Great Scott GS 0008 was originally issued with all of the information exactly as I have presented it above.  Sometime thereafter, The Great Scott GS 0008 (the same record number) was re-issued with many changes, as listed below:

-The artist was changed from "Leo Davison & The Collinairs" to "Albert Collins Orchestra; Leo Davison, vocalist".

-The song title "Hello Mae" was changed to "Lonely Heart".

-The song title "It's Never Too Late" was changed to "True Love".

-The composer for both songs was changed from "L. Davison" to "Frank Scott".

In addition, Gerd Miller's post suggests that only the original version had the stamped "Sheldon" wax matrix mark.

The website of Discogs confirms the above changes and further states - of the "Lonely Heart - True Love" release that it was "retitled to cash in on Albert Collins' success!".

The post of Gerd Miller gives "12/62" as the date of release of the "Hello Mae/It's Never Too Late" release.  The website of Discogs gives 1963.  I was able to find the release of "Hello Mae/It's Never Too Late" announced in the August 17, 1963 issue of Billboard Magazine.  ("Hello Mae" received a 4 star rating from this publication!)

I was unable to find out anything about "Leo Davison".  Albert Collins was born in 1932 and became known as an electric blues guitarist with a distinctive style that incorporated altered tunings and a capo.  He was sometimes called "The Master of the Telecaster", because of his long association with Fender Telecaster.  Success came slowly to Collins who continued to work construction jobs well into the 1970s.  His first studio album, The Cool Sound of Albert Collins, was released in 1965 and was a compilation of previously released singles.  (The songs on the single I am selling are not on this album.)  He would go on to receive Grammy nominations and a Grammy award.  Collins died of lung cancer in 1993.  He was a major influence on the next generation of Texas guitarists, including Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
