This lovely and rare LP from French Columbia (FCX 842, French pressing, blue/silver label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features the great Leonid Kogan's fiery and poetic account of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35, recorded at the Theatre Apollo, Paris on 3-4 June 1956 with Constantin Silvestri conducting the l'Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, Paris.
For the interested, the movement timings for the Tchaikovsky are as follows:
I Allegro moderato 18:09
II Canzonetta: Andante 06:13
III Finale: Allegro vivacissimo 09:08
Filling out the disc is Kogan's equally mesmerizing rendition of Tchaikovsky's Méditation for Violin and Orchestra Op. 42 No. 1 ("Souvenir d'un lieu cher"), made at the Salle Wagram, Paris on 10-11 November 1959, with Constantin Silvestri and the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. The timing here runs to 07:40.
Incidenally, there excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Italian only.
The reverse side of the jacket carries two sets of insightful liner notes, the first by Tolia Nikiprowetzky, and the second by Marcel Marnat, both printed in French only. The memorable cover photo of Kogan is credited to Photo Pic.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD+. There is light edgewear, more so at corners, as well as mild discoloration. However, there are no bends, owners' markings, seamsplits, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not perfectly silent, this is a fine copy and the playback remains enjoyable. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as a truly excellent collector's copy.
