This fascinating and rare LP – in a heavy cardboard “Red Stereo” jacket – from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPEM 19292, jacket printed in the USA, LP pressed in Germany, AH tulip label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features the four laureates of the 1961 Liszt-Bartok International Competition held in Budapest, recordings made by Qualiton and issued shortly after on DG. While 3rd Prize Winner Valentyn Belcsenko is not otherwise represented in the catalog, the other 3 pianists went on to distinguished careers, though Ciani’s would be tragically cut short.

Included are the following performances:

Gabor Gabos, 1st Prize Winner: Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor

David Wilde, 1st Prize Winner: Liszt’s Mazeppa

Dino Ciani, 2nd Prize Winner: Bartok’s “Night Music” and “The Chase” (Nos. 4 and 5 from Out of Doors Sz 81)

Valentyn Belcsenko, 3rd Prize Winner: Liszt’s Les Funerailles

Incidentally, there are brief biographical sketches of all three artists on the rear of the jacket, printed in English only. The striking cover art is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the heavy cardboard jacket is EXCELLENT. There is bumping/wear at corners and along the open edge, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a lovely collector's copy.
