Description
As a possible addition to your record shelves I’m offering a copy of Little Richard’s first album - Here’s Little Richard.
This is a Specialty Records - 1957 - First Pressing with Catalogue number
SP 100
This is a styrene injection record. This method of production was used by various record companies back in the 1950s. The last photo above shows the record to be a bit under an eighth of an inch thick with the edge being flat. When you “tap” the record it gives off that “tin” like sound. More on the record’s condition below.
The best part of this copy is undoubtedly the cover. It has the yellow and black “Specialty HIGH FIDELITY recording” oval at the top right with the SP 100 catalogue number above. This was only used in 1957 for the first batch pressed (injected).
The front cover surface looks great and is covered in it’s original high gloss. No flaking as found on many records from this era. There’s very little wear and no tape on the seams. All the seams are in great condition except for one area located at the bottom right. It is split about two inches at the opening edge where the record would slide in (see pics.).
The white background on the rear cover is very clean for a cover that is very susceptible to staining. There are no stickers or any tape or tape residue. There is one area directly below the essay that has a small geometric like design. Not sure if it’s pen or pencil. Haven’t attempted to remove it.
I try to point out any flaws I can find rather than hiding them. Even with the mentioned flaws this is a great looking cover in very solid condition.
Now the record. This record has been enjoyed, very enjoyed. There is undoubtedly background noise throughout that can be noticed. Side two plays better than side one. Less noticeable noise. Side one also has a few skips. There are two found on track one but it does play through. There is another on track five that jumps.
If I was keeping this record I would definitely get out the cellphone microscope and pin to clear out the grooves at the point of the skips but unfortunately I don’t have the time to preform the operation. If you’re into that kind of procedure, I know this record is a great candidate for it. If you’ve never tried it , check it out. I’ve fixed countless skips with this method. It can be a bit time consuming though.
There are plenty of marks on both sides but nothing that can be felt when running your fingers over the surface. These styrene records mark easy and are much stiffer than vinyl. They don’t “give” at all.
Fortunately the labels are in nice condition and look great.
Due to the playback condition of the record I can’t ask what I’d ask for a better copy so I’ll also include another playable pressing from 1957 upon request. It’s not a first pressing, it’s on the second pressing’s Black and Gold label and the cover has seam splits but it plays alright and it’s free. Just drop me a note after you PayPal and it yours.
I think that covers it. This is a true relic from the birth of Rock ‘N Roll. I wish the record played a bit better but the cover is pure killer and it looks great.
