It was a very smart move by Atlantic producer George Avakian to release the recording by the Charles Lloyd Quartet in Monterey under the title "Forest Flower". The hippie flower power movement at the end of the 60s, actually devoted to a different musical genre, was totally into this music. The four musicians filled the visitor chairs, benches and standing room at the festivals in NEWPORT , between Molde / Norway and Antibes / France and those of the Fillmore East and West. And Monterey, 120 km south of San Francisco, the capital of the hippies, presented the supergroup on September 18, 1966.
The LP includes the title track, which is almost 18 minutes long, and the standard "East Of The Sun", recorded during the festival. The LP is complemented by a composition by Keith Jarrett and one by Cecil McBee, recorded in the studio ten days before the festival.
The intense interplay, the energy, tangible in every second, the perfect harmony, even with every change in the musical mood, the intensity remain outstanding. Even after 50 years it can be heard and felt that Charles Lloyd is committed to breaking the musical barriers between pop and jazz.
Charles Lloyd is still committed to this goal today, all four musicians are still active - even if they no longer stand together on the festival stages. Only this newly mastered LP is available for this special treat
