ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This extremely rare gatefold LP from Les Discophiles Français (DF 214, French pressing, white/blue label – ED1, mono – no stereo edition exists, canvas jacket) features the legendary Loewenguth String Quartet, with 2nd cellist Roger Loewenguth, in a rapt and moving performance of Schubert’s great String Quintet in C Major D. 956 (Op. 163), warmly recorded in the Salle Adyar, Paris on 7 January 1957.

At this time, the Quatuor Loewenguth was comprised of Alfred Loewenguth (1st Violin), Maurice Fueri (2nd Violin), Roger Roche (Viola), and Pierre Basseux (Cello).
For the connoisseur, the movement timings are as follows:
I Allegro ma non troppo 15’10”
II Adagio 12’00”
III Scherzo presto – Andante sostenuto – Scherzo 8’45”
IV Allegretto 10’
There is a wisdom and humanity here that disarms criticism, playing from a bygone age, and a performance that can withstand the most exalted comparisions with any quartet before or since.
Incidentally, in the interior panels of the gatefold canvas jacket there are superlative liner notes – printed in French only – by Carl De Nys.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold canvas jacket is VERY GOOD. There is minor bumping/wear at corners, mild discoloration, and a bit of writing to the left interior panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the album remains very solid and very attractive in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is FAIR (Note: This is near the bottom of my grading scale). There is persistent surface noise throughout as well as some tics and “needle-like” sounds, affecting mostly the 3rd Movement, and a bit of the 1st. The 2nd and 4th Movements are not so affected, just surface noise. It does play through - there are no needle jumps - but keep in mind the problems I have described. Thus, those wanting flawless, near-mint, or even excellent surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, though this is not a collector’s copy, it is still a decent one.
