Towering above all other music through years of musical changes and trends, stand the hymns of the church and some worshipful gospel songs. Lorne and Jimmie Ruth Matthews have captured with simplicity and beauty some of these soothing, sacred melodies. Their uncluttered style brings the listeners attention immediately to the familiar melodies. Lome Matthews hails from Toronto, Canada, where he studied eight years at the Toronto Conservatory of Music. His unique accompaniment, both on records and in personal performance for the McDuff Brothers Trio has established him as one of the foremost pianists in gospel music, both in all night sing concerts and church revivals. Lome has been offered posi- tions with the most famous quartets and evangelists in the United States and Canada, but he is thankful to have the knowledge that God has led in His perfect plan to the McDuff Brothers. His piano solo album “Dis- tinctive Gospel Styles of Lome Matthews” (Zondervan ZLP-713) readily established him as a solo recording artist in his own right. Lome highly esteems the compliment paid to him at the conclusion of this recording session. In the words of the chief engineer: “Few pianists can record the true voice of a piano like Lome Matthews.” Jimmie Ruth Matthews, hailing from Kingsport in the hills of east Tennessee, brings to this husband and wife duo the great musical heritage of the South. Her natural talents were developed and broadened at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago from which she graduated. While at- tending this school, she had the honor of using her voice as a soloist for the Moody Chorale, and also was chosen to sing with a select radio choir for Billy Graham Hour of Decision broadcasts. While a student, she also worked musically for radio station WMBI in Chicago. Jimmie Ruth’s dedication and devotion to Jesus Christ is a rare thing, and it is this in- gredient that makes the difference in her music. The simplicity of her organ stylings on this album are refreshing and soothing to the thoughtful and worshipful listener. To find a husband-wife team of such equal and great talent is an un- usual combination, and the question which almost instantly arises when the Matthews are introduced to anyone is: “How did you two ever get together?” One will soon recognize from accents that Lome and Jimmie Ruth were born far apart. Lome was playing the piano for The King’s Men of Peoples Church in Toronto in 1962. Jimmie Ruth was just graduating from the Moody Bible Institute in June of that year. She felt a very definite leading from the Lord to work at the River Valley Ranch in Millers, Mary- land for the summer. While she was serving at this Christian youth camp, The King’s Men were guest musicians. So at the Mason-Dixon border, a Canadian boy and a Tennessee girl met and fell in love. They were married the following December in Kingsport. A verse of Scripture which the Matthews have chosen as the motto of their lives together sums up the feelings of their reaction to this record: Psalm 84:11 —“No good thing will He withhold from them that walk up- rightly.” All who listen will be glad that Lome and Jimmie Ruth have com- bined their piano and organ talents for your listening pleasure and spiritual blessing.
