Up for sale is a scarce 78 rpm shellac 10 inch record, with a couple of great hot jazz treatments of classic songs, performed by the incomparable Louis Armstrong (and His Orchestra)
Record Label: Vocalion Record Number: 3643 Year of Release: 1937 [Note: The labels say: "Lab. Copy. 1937 by Brunswick Record Corporation." My research shows that this particular label design, with the words "Full Range Recording" at the top, was only used in 1937.] Artist: Louis Armstrong And His Orchestra One side: 19598 I Got Rhythm (Gershwin-Gershwin) [Fox Trot With Vocal Refrain] Wax matrix marks: "19598" and "1-3" Other side: 18852 After You've Gone (Creamer-Layton) [Fox Trot With Vocal Refrain] Wax matrix mark: "18852" and "1-3"
My research shows that Armstrong's cover of "After You've Gone" was originally released on Okeh 41350 (recorded in 1929, released in 1930) and that his cover of "I Got Rhythm" was originally released on Okeh 41534 (recorded in 1931, released in 1932).
"After You've Gone" was composed by Turner Layton with lyrics by Henry Creamer, in 1918. It has been recorded by a veritable "who's who" of singers. "I Got Rhythm" was composed by the Gershwin brothers for the 1930 Broadway show, Girl Crazy. Armstrong's early recording of this classic is notable for a very hot jazz treatment with Armstrong taunting and teasing the members of his orchestra to show him what they've got.
