Louis Farrakhan-Calypso 78rpm-Monogram 930 The Charmer
Yes, one and the same, the controversial leader of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan started out in the Boston area as a Calypsonian, calling himself The Charmer.
He is supposed to have made a dozen recordings on Monogram label in 1953-1954.
This one is Monogram 930 and he sings, "Is She Is, Or Is She Ain't" and "Back To Back, Belly To Belly." He is accompanied by Johnny McCleverty's Calypso Boys.
Both songs have additional significance. The A side is a topical number on Christine Jorgensen, who was the first highly publicized person to have a series of operations for a sex change back in the fifties.
The reverse side is a song that the Kingston Trio made popular (as "Zombie Jamboree") on their blockbuster late 1950's album recorded live at San Francisco's "Hungry i" restaurant.
Farrakhan was born Louis Eugene Walcott on May 11, 1933 in the Bronx, but was raised in Roxbury Mass. (a suburb of Boston). He was an honor student, a track star, and an accomplished violinist, and even performed on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour. He started his calypso career at the age of 16.
This 78rpm record is in excellent-minus (E-) condition with numerous light surface scuffs.
Might I add, "The Charmer" sings pretty darn good!
